Quick question about Ravenna
 

I had planned to go to Ravenna on a previous trip but didn't make it due to a bad cold. Hoping to get there and plan to do all my research like a good Fodorite, but without spending a lot of time checking each church out, can anyone tell me if they are open to see all those great mosaics on Sunday? Thanks!

I was in Ravenna on a Sunday in 2016 and found that we had to wait for mass to finish before we were allowed into the Church of San Vitale to view the mosaics. The nearby mausoleum was open as I recall visiting it while waiting. Others may have more recent experiences but a search of various mass times at the churches you choose to visit may be useful

Can't answer the specific question, I visited during the week, but I wanted to put in a recommendation for Ferrara. I have twice visited Ravenna as a day trip from Ferrara, which is a small town with a moated castle and encircling walls that I really like. My first visit it had better accommodation than Ravenna, too.

Everything about it was wonderful, especially the kind hosts who drove us to the train station upon request. (We walked a couple of times; it's not far.) Beautifully appointed, centrally located, just a block or two from the lovely park where we rode our (free!) bikes along the city walls. We were so captivated by Ferrara that we didn't make it to Ravenna (but we're going this fall, by way of Bologna, which we visited from Ferrara and loved).

It's reasonably priced and the breakfast, served in the lovely garden, is terrific.

If you're looking for Ferrara recs, I stayed at the Corte Estense in 2017 and you can't get more central than that. Lovely hotel, as well.

You’re welcome, SusanP. Given others’ Sunday experiences, to confirm what’s on the website, you could also inquire on the Tripadvisor Ravenna forum. There may be a local who can provide current information.

Thanks to all for the recommendations for Ferrara, I'll check them out. Not sure if I'll stay there instead of Ravenna, so if you have any recommendations for there, let me know.

I pondered staying in Ferrara for a few days a couple years ago (ended up choosing another town), and now I find myself doing so again. Thanks to those who have named their accommodations.

SusanP, I have been to Ravenna, but I don't think it was on a Sunday, so I have nothing to offer other than I hope you make it there. The mosaics are stunning. I'm an extraordinarily lazy vacationer, but I am so glad I hauled myself out of bed and to the train station to get to Ravenna.

Leele2, I was so annoyed to have to miss them last time and hope to remedy that!
