Vienna Opera Tickets

My wife and I are planning a trip to Vienna in April 2016. We really want to secure tickets to see Tosca which is playing on April 9th. I requested standby tickets last May, but have not heard any update since then. I am worried this performance will sell out and I won't be able to secure tickets. Does anyone have any suggestions of alternative ways to secure tickets to these popular performances? I would greatly appreciate any advice.

I'll be quite interested in any constructive answers such as going through a ticket broker. I'd love to see almost ANY performance in that house without having to buy a subscription.

PS from what I can deduce on the site - you won't know until 2 months before the event. Have you used the customer support part of the site?

Are the two of you saying that purchasing directly is the only way to get tickets?

Thank you for the responses. I talked to the State Opera. Apparently the performance sold out almost immediately and I am on a wait list. Unfortunately the list is long and I was told I have little chance of getting tickets. I have seen some third-party sites selling tickets for nearly 600-700 euros. I simply cannot justify such a high price. Hoping another avenue opens up. I appreciate the suggestion about the standing room option. I wonder if they will broadcast this opera?

Just came back from Vienna - SRO tickets for the Opera is not just buying a ticket and then showing up for the performance. There is a huge line that starts about 3 hours before the performance, where you wait to buy the ticket, then wait for the performance to start, then stand for the performance. This is totally fine if you are a teenager/in your 20s, but not a reasonable solution for an adult who really wants to enjoy their evening.

I've been to the Statsoper three times and each time paid for tickets through a broker. The last time was 5 years ago and about 300€--times and prices have changed. This is a once in a decade experience for me so I just closed my eyes and paid up. Not sure I could do 700€!

I like productions at the Volksoper, easier to obtain tickets but of course not the same overall experience.

No other suggestions, maybe watch ebay, we sold tickets we couldn't use to the Paris opera on ebay in about 45 minutes. We just asked for what we paid which was through the box office so not marked up.
