questions: baccarat museum/shop in paris
hi fodorites,

i was in chicago recently and visited the art institute's collection of paperweights. i knew very little about paperweights before visiting the museum. i was totally blown away by what i saw and am now looking to find other collections to visit.

i noticed that MANY of the paperweights on display in chicago were by baccarat. i know there is a baccarat museum and several shops in paris.

can you tell me whether the museum has any paperweights on display and/or if the baccarat shops have any paperweights for sale? i'm not looking to purchase vintage/rare/antique paperweights but i'd love to see what is available for sale directly from the source.

and, to others who have been to the baccarat museum, what exactly was on display?

The Baccarat museum is on Rue Paradis. I don't remember if they showed any paper weights but you can call them before going. If they show them I doubt very much that any will be for sale.

Musee Baccarat is no longer on rue Paradis-- many maps still show the old location (I emailed Red Maps a few years/editions back about that and promptly received a thank-you email from their president, but they still haven't bothered to update it). Since 2003, it has been on Place des Etats-Unis, in a lovely old hotel particulier with interior by Philippe Starck. I don't remember there were papar weights, but rest of the exhibit-- furniture, vases, chandeliers, jewelry..., is definitely worth a visit. Don't miss the gorgeous restroom.

(sorry about the typos and skipped words-- not used to this laptop whose cursor keeps jumping around).

I went to the Musee Baccarat and its emphasis is on crystal. I don't remember any paperweights.

I grew up in Chicago and loved the paperweight collection. The collection at the Musee Baccarat was worth a visit - but I vastly prefer the Art Institute's paperweight collection.

I don't know if they sell paperweights, but here's Baccarat's web site:

hi fodorites,

thanks so much for all of the feedback ... i'm not a huge fan of crystal in general so i will give them a call when we get to paris to find out about paperweights. or if we're in the neighbourhood, we'll just swing by and ask.

The national decorative arts museum has a collection of crystal paperweights. It's next to the Louvre.
