My daughter bought a second-hand dirndl for a ridiculously cheap price in Berlin last summer (definitely less than 5 Euros). But it didn't look like what I think of as a dirndl, but apparently that's what it is.

While some in Bavaria where lederhosen every day, most of these costumes are worn, say, to weddings as a sort of formal wear there.

They are priced accordingly.

I always wonder about Americans buying these clothes, as you are unlikely to wear them at home.

Germans in big cities almost never wear them unless they are in the tourist business or waiting tables in restaurants.

I would check second hand shops, as others have suggested, for good deals.

Check out the local markets. Some have sellers that offer Bavarian clothing. I was able to buy a very nice traditional shirt (complete with pewter buttons) for my husband for about $50.

Despite Logos negativity towards Americans in dirndls, I think it's a great idea. You see lots of stars, German and other, wearing them at the Oktoberfest. (The "Gala" magazine never lies.) Why can't us normal folk do the same? I googled "dirndls" "mieten" and got the following link.

Dirndls to rent:

Logos: Hast Du Liebeskummer oder sonst was? Heute bist Du extrem zynisch.

Morgen Logos,

Ich verstehe schon was du meinst aber der Oktoberfest ist wie Fasching: die Leute werden ungehemmt und Fantasie wird zur Realität. Was Bier/Alkohol alles verursachen kann.

"Lassen die Schweizer so etwas bieten?" Niemand interessiert sich für unsere wunderschönen Jodlerfesten außer den Schweizern. Und unser Trachten sie nie so erotisch als die von Österreich und Deutschland.

Okay,I don't get it! What's the big deal? If you really wanna wear Dirndls and Lederhosen to the Oktoberfest,go for it! Just keep in mind that nowadays I think more foreigners than Germans wear those. Also,I would like to mention that you will never find Dirndls and Lederhosen in other parts of Germany, such as Northern Germany! This is a Bavarian thing, not a typical German thing! It's only popular in Southern Germany! And I am German,by the way, born and raised in Germany,as German as it gets, and I can tell you that this whole idea of Germans wearing dirndls and lederhosen is, for the most part, nothing more than a cliche, a stereotype. True, there may very well be some Bavarians who still wear those to church or traditional festivals, but certainly not the majority. Moin moin und viel Spass noch!
