Questions about Dubrovnik, Croatia

I have some questions about Dubrovnik that I have been unable to find out in my reading. Can one wave down a taxi or do you have to wait at a taxi stand? When getting into a taxi should the price be negotiated first or or do they use the meter? I love to shop and am staying in the Lapad area. Are there any department and/or grocery stores in that area? Are there any good bargains? Besides Montenegro are there any other day trips that I could take? I will be going on March 20-28. Are the ferrys running to the islands during that time of year? How about any good, reasonably priced restaurants? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

From my experience,I waited at a taxi stand and the used the meter for the price. Best shopping is in the old town. Lapad will certainly have markets for you to go to. There is one department store (in Croatian "Robna Kuca", pronounced robna koocha) I can think of, It's not that impressive and not in old town, I believe it's in the area called Gruz, not to far from the bus station. There is no shortage of good reasonably priced restaurants in Dubrovnik - of course, for the ambiance, I would suggest restaurants in the old town. Perhaps one of the restaurants situated on an old cobblestone narrow walkway.

Nina

No offense Tom but Fodor's has a no advertising policy. Hopefully you'll still answer questions about Croatia and contribute to this forum freely.
