Question for 'thanos_GR' about Mykonos..

Hi, I was told you were the person to see about my question from another poster on frommers.com . I would be thankful if you could help me out as I've been having a tough time choosing which beach to stay on.

I will be going to Mykonos in early September and I'm trying to figure out where is the best place to stay. Most likely it will be on a beach. I have found several "nice" hotels but the problem is they're on 3 different beaches: Oronos, Platys Gialos, and Psarou.

I have found mixed reviews of every beach, (especially Plats Gialos) -so I'm a bit unsure of which of the 3 to stay on. The only thing that really matters is that the beaches are clean, and the water clear (with little seaweed), in addition to a few shops, taverns, and markets in the area.

I will be going with a friend and my parents (which is why its necessary to be on a decent beach in order to limit their bitching! lol)

Anyhow I would greatly appreciate any help you could provide.

Good evening Tammy

Thank you for the message.

First I need to let you know that I write this as someone who visit our beaches as local person and not tourist. This make a difference I know as tourist may look for something I do not so you must remember this please. Also, clear water and sand is good on all beaches so do not worry.

Ornos is the closest to Chora and is a good size beach with facing a bay that is protected almost from strong winds. Wind strong should not be a problem in September as Meltemi blows mostly July and August. The beach is attached to the village where you will find plenty of taverna, restaurants and shopping and accommodation. Also, there is a regular bus into Chora, which takes maybe 10 minutes and costs only a few euro. In September the regular service maybe every 40 minutes. Also there are restaurants and tavernas on the beach. You can travel to other beaches by boat from Ornos.

Plati Gialos has bars and tavernas on and beside beach and this can be a very busy place. A very long beach, it has good sand but many people. It is I think one of the most popular beaches. I need to tell you it is very organised and everything you need will be here. Nice surroundings but for me too many people. Even September can be busy time here but it is very beautiful place. Also from here regular bus service into Chora, maybe about 20 minutes journey time. You can travel to other beaches by boat from this place also.

Psarou is close to Plati Gialos and one of the older places and first Myconos known beaches. Is not big and does not have maybe to many bars and restaurants but some are there of course. Perhaps it is not so big when lot of people go here it looks many crowds. Is a sheltered bay, better shelter than others. I am sorry but for me this is my least favourite but tourists enjoy it very much. There is a local bus service also to Chora from here.

One beach you have not mentioned and I recommend strong is Agios Yannis. This is known as the most beautiful place and beach on the island. It is a narrow stretch of sand close to local taverna and restaurants. Regular bus service to Chora every 30 minutes until late night. Also town is maybe 10 minutes by bus from here. This is a very quiet area, and a very beautiful place. It is known as the most scenic on the island with views to Delos and the blue sea around it. There are some very nice hotels here also with views that are the best. The movie Shirley Valentine was filmed here so if you can find it and view you will see exactly how the place looks. There are now more homes and a few more small boutique hotels but it has not changed much since the movie was completed. If you wish hotel recommendations for this place let me know and I will tell you.

Wow, great information here. Wish I had those details before our last trip.

Just thought I would post to confirm what Thanos says about Agios Yannis – for me this is the most beautiful place. The blues of the sea there were amazing and the view across to Delos is sensational. The beach IS a narrow strip but beautiful sand, and nice and quiet. There are two tavernas on the beach and both are worth trying out. Nice food at a reasonable price. We lodged in the town both times we visited Mykonos but if there is a third visit it will be Agios Yannis for us.

On our second trip to the island (last year) we visited the beach at Plati Gialos but it was much too busy for us.

hmm.. well I think I'm ruling out Platys Gialos and I'm kinda leaning towards Oronos at this point.

About Agios Yannis - could you guys tell me of the possible accomodation? I've tried to find some but I only found 2 places for some reason and they're a bit pricey!

Thx for your help guys!

hello milly

Yes Agios Yannis (Agios Ioannis) is a special place. When a child I was told that the small area of sea between Agios Yannis beach and the island of Delos has a section that is one of few places on earrth that has purest form of natural sunlight. This we know as called Apollonia effect.

Perhaps that is why the sea is those many colours of blue and the light good, but i am not sure.

Yes. hotels here are expensive at this beach and include the St John Hotel and the Mykonos Grand. There is another popular hotel called the Manoulas and it is not so expensive but very nice. I do not have the address but will find it for you and come back and post it.

Also, sometimes the Greek accommodation agencies will offer better rates so if you need details of thsoe let me know.

Ther are also some very nice villas to rent here. Again, I will search out contact addresses if you are interested in those.

Tammy, Ornos is closest of three places you write about to Agios Yannis and you could walk there over the hill or take the local bus if very hot weather.

Once again thx for all your imput! :-)

I ended up booking with Golden Beach Studios on Ornos beach. The rooms look quite simple but the beach looks great and its proximity to the Chora were the deciding factors.

Also I will take your advice and hike up the hill to Agios Yannis and maybe take in a sunset.
