Question for maribel and cruiseluv

I am traveling to Spain in July for 16 nights (dates not flexible). Based on what I have read it is best to stay North b/c the weather in the south is hot. I am going to Leon (thinking 3 nights), thinking of doing Madrid (4 nights with side trips) and Barcelona (5 nights). Looking for another city in Northern Spain (considering Oviedo and Gijon). What do you think of this itinerary and how long should I spend in each place. We are going to fly when possible if the train/bus takes 3 or more hours. I am just looking to be at 4-5 cities and then do side trips. I speak spanish. Looking for a place that is not too often the beaten path.

Thanks

How about Santiago de Compostela?

Is it easy to get there from Leon? If so do you know how to get there (plane/train?) and how many nights do you recommend

thanks

Hi natty22,

I think there is one train per day from Leon to Santiago, and it's about a 6 hour journey, through incredibly prety countryisde (check out the Renfe website at www.renfe.es)

Driving you could do it in 4 hours (though it would be best to stick to the motorways and come in from the South via Ourense).

It is well worth the trip, and I wouldn't even consider visiting either Oviedo or Gijon ahead of Santiago. You will love it! Stay there at least 3 nights.

Also, very few of the locals speak English so you'll have plenty of chance to practice your Spanish!

Natty,

I have responded already under your other thread , but I agree 100% with guarro. IMO, Santiago is the loveliest place I've visited in Spain and I would pick it over Oviedo any day!
In addition to train there is bus between Santiago and Leon and it takes 5.5 hr . See itinerary at www.alsa.es

Guarro,
If Natty wants to breakdown the trip between Santiago and Leon, do you have any recommendations for a stopover?
