Thanks Lizzy201. That started to work, however I was searching for Barcelona and it would not let me save it.

However, then I went and tried my Citymapper app, which does let me easily save actual routes - not just cities - so I could type in a point to point. I did so going from where I will be staying to a point that looks like a pretty straightforward run route and it mapped it for me, saved it, and I just checked and can access it online.

It will not only save the map, it will let you use it in conjunction with the GPS service (which doesn't use data and doesn't cost anything). In other words, it will trace your itinerary from where you are to where you want to go. It won't give turn by turn voice directions, but I'm not sure iPhones do that anyway.

Using GPS really wears down your battery fast, so turn it on just when you need it and turn it off immediately when you don't need it any more.
