Question about staying in the Museumplein are
 

Hi everyone
Going to Amsterdam in late September for 4 nights as part of a longer two-week trip. I have almost exclusively stayed in apartments during my past trips to Europe.
I have never been to Amsterdam, and was seeing hotels fill before my eyes for the week of my stay. A friend stayed in (and loved) The Conservatorium Hotel in the Museumplein neighborhood and I was able to book it.
Am now wondering if this area (while clearly convenient to some of the major museums as well as Vondelpark) was my best choice in terms of accessibility to the rest of the city- canals, other sights, shopping etc.
Would welcome any thoughts on this, and to getting around Amsterdam as well, as I have just really begun my planning.

We liked staying in the canal ring afea. Check Hotel Ambassade on the zherengracht canal.

I think so. I stayed in that area as I wanted to be close to the museums and not far from the COncertgebouw as I had tickets. It's really only a few blocks to the canal, you could walk to Anne Frank's house if you wanted, although it is 3 km. So that's an example, it's only 850 meters to Leidesplein. I wanted to be closer to the Concertgebouw as I wanted to walk to/from it, but if you don't, something more central might suit you better if you want to walk to things a lot. I did have to take the tram to/from some things and it was fine but you have to figure that out.

The tram runs directly in front of that hotel so you will not have any trouble getting to other parts of the city.

To me it is a great place to stay - well away from the flotsam and jetson you still see in more central Amsterdam at times and lots of stores nearby including a large Albert Heijn underground store under Museumplein itself that has everything anyone will need at the lowest costs.

It is a short walk to the canal boats and like christina says not very far from anything of major interest in Amsterdam - and walking between top sights in this city can be as interesting as the sights themselves.

And it is very close to Vondel Park if you want a tranquil place to walk or stroll or jog.

It's a place also easily accessible by private cars.

Like dukey says it is on a main street with a couple of tram lines serving it - a snap to get anywhere in the greater Amsterdam area by tram if not into walking much.

It's just a typo, but for information's sake, the Hotel Ambassade is on the Herengracht canal.

Such a stylish area where you'll be. If you have a little time, as an evening stroll, walk around Willemsparkweg, Van Eeeghenstraat etc. In the nineteenth century this was where the country's greats lived, especially in the arts. And today it's still an extremely well heeled area.

For instance: Willemsparkweg, Cornelis Schuystraat, turn left into Van Eeghenstraat, then right into Vondelpark, turn right again at the next exit to Van Eeghenstraat, Van Eeghenlaan and you'll be opposite Conservatorium again at van Baerlestraat again.
