Question about Naxos

Sorry for the 2nd thread, but I realized I might have asked the wrong question! For a return visit to Naxos with our son-in-law who has never been, we'd like to stay on the most
beautiful beach, preferably in a really nice boutique hotel. Any recommendations would be so appreciated! Thank you!

And I might give you the "wrong" answer. ;) Do you want to stay on the beach because you want to be steps from the water or hear the rote of the surf? Because if not, I can't recommend the Hotel Grotta strongly enough -- gorgeous views over the Portara and water from a bluff above the town, superb service, and if there's a better breakfast buffet to be had in Greece, I don't care, because it was amazing (and I had some memorable breakfasts in Greece)! But it's about a half-hour walk to St. George's beach IIRC, more if you walk along the waterfront or want to avoid climbing into the Old Town.

Thanks so much, kja. Sounds lovely, but we are looking for a hotel on a beach out of town. We have stayed at Nissaki, and while we loved walking to town, we
didn't love St. George beach.

I fully agree with you. I once spent half a day at Agios Georgios (between a ferry from Iraklia and another one to Sikinos) and I didn't like this place. If you don't want to stay far away from the Chora, Agios Prokopios (see your fist post) is a much better place.
More in the South (Mikri Vigla etc.) it can get very windy.
I don't know the "deep south", however.

Thanks so much! Considering a private house on Plaka Beach. Have you been?

travelerjan Nov 28th, 2018 07:29 AM

Plaka beach is wonderful... I often take the bus out there for a "Beach afternoon" ... a private house is extremely unlikely to be directly ON the beach, because almost all direct beachfront has hotels or small pensions, but it could be slightly back from it, with "beach views" from patios or balconies. Ask specifically how many meters from the beach it is ... sometimes things are misrepresented if rentals privately, and not very walkable to beach. As example for a new Yorker, I used to live on Gramercy Park, and noted with amusement that buildings or businesses as far away as 32nd would use the "magical" name, i.e. Gramercy Plaza. Gramercy Cleaners etc.

Thank you so much, travelerjan! As a New Yorker, I got a good laugh out of your Gramercy Park mention. So true! I think this house is set back about two blocks from the beach. The description says it is about a 15 min drive from town. Does that sound about right to you? We have stayed in town a few times, but wanted a beach experience this time.

THat sounds fine as long as you don't "stay too long at the fair" i.e. have such a good time @ dinner in town with a glass of wine or 3, plus the raki they always force on you ... and then drive home on in the dark with no lighting along the road (Greek isles dont believe in them). Buckle the seatbelts.
