question about international roaming

Hi, all
I am set up to do international roaming when in France (w/my US phone); all set with the right type of phone, etc. but I cannot figure out whether it will cost the earth to receive e-mail (automatically forwarded from my home server). AT &T keeps harping on what it costs to SEND, but won't give me a straight answer on costs of simply receiving and either reading or deleting e-mail unopened. They cannot seem to understand the question. I hope you Fodorites can do a little better.
Thanks
Jess

If AT&T don't know, how could anybody else know the answer? Maybe charged per kilobyte or megabyte, maybe not?

I don't know but it will be less than the call rate, so maybe that will comfort you a tiny bit. ;)

I'm not with ATT myself, but you can probably find the rates somewhere in this table:
http://www.wireless.att.com/business...comp-table.jsp

International data roaming is typically 0.5 to 1.5 cents a kilobyte ($5-$15 a megabyte) - fairly reasonable if you receive and send just a few short emails, but it can get expensive very quickly if you don't fully understand what you are doing. Charges of several thousand dollars are not unknown.

Here's a link to some of those thousand dollar horror stories: http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/...cell-travelers

There's also some good advice further down that page.

Don't know about email but talked to TMobile and was advised to keep my phone off until it was needed. If kept on, system thinks it is on network and will incur additional fees for calls that come in. Best to do a search online for your cell phone company for answers. Consider driving to the store for that co. for answers. Good luck.

Hi
I am also with AT&T and have aquad band phone. Call them again, they have an International customer service dept. We used it last week, because regular customer "service" can't help you with your question.
