question about drive in Dolomites
We will be traveling from Venice to Selva di Gardena (Wolkenstein). Is it worth driving to Selva via Cortina d'Ampezzo? Is the drive from Cortina to Selva one we'd want to do anyway?
We will have three days in the Dolomites (including our travel day to get there) and plan mostly on hiking, but we want to be sure we don't miss a really wonderful scenic drive, too. thanks. |
can someone also please tell me where Selva is in relation to the Gardena Pass and the A22? thanks

From Venice, given good weather, I would drive via Cortina.
Selva is near the Sella Pass at the east end of Val Gardena. Here are pics! http://www.slowphotos.com/photo/show...y.php?cat=4441 |
Hi,
I would do the drive via Cortina d'Ampezzo. Head east from Cortina and drive through the Alta Badia (San Cassiano/La Villa, Colfosco) and over the Gardena Pass into Selva/Wolkenstein. The Gardena Pass will bring you RIGHT into Selva/Wolkenstien, plus the Gardena Pass is a spectacular drive. Selva/Wolkenstein sits right at the begining (or end) of the Gardena Pass. The A22 is about 30 minutes to the west of Selva/Wolkenstein. Selva is located at the eastern end of the Val Gardena and the A22 is pretty much at the western end. The entire Val Gardena isn't that long. Paul Paul |
Correction... head WEST from Cortina.

Is the drive from Cortina to Selva one we'd want to do anyway? Absolutely! If the weather is good.
We did the drive via the Pordoi and Sella passes, which was pretty spectacular--but if I did it again, I'd do it the way Paul describes above through the Alta Badia and Gardena Pass. When are you going? On that route, you'll pass right by the Lagazuoi lift. We were there late in the day and didn't have time to go up, but the photos I've seen from the ride up/top are pretty spectacular. We stayed in Selva, and there is terrific hiking in that area. Enjoy! |
ms_go, I forgot to mention that the Lagazuoi cable car is right on the way. We took that ride a few years ago. It is also one of the few lifts open in mid to late October. If the weather is nice, you may want to take the cable car. It doesn't require much time either. Pretty quick trip to the top.

fabulous! We'll do the drive as suggested, and try to take up the cable car along the way.

reporting in from Selva to say we took the suggested route and it was phenomenal! Got their too late to take the gondola up at the pass. Am loving the Dolomites and very happy we picked Selva as our base.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the dolomites!

I'm glad to hear it, too. And yeah, that drive really is something else, isn't it!?
