question about Aegean flight times
 

Good Morning,
I'm flying from Crete to Athens and then Athens to crete. I have to decide whether to have a 50 minute layover in Athens or a wait of over two hours. I'm wondering if the 50 minutes is enough or should I not chance it seeing as there is only one flight a day from Athens to Santorini.

Not just in Greece, but anywhere in the world, I always try to arrange my flight itinerary to have the longest possible connecting times I can stand. I've never regretted it and often been thankful for it.

Aegean is a good airline, and ATH is one of the better-managed airports, but even so in your situation I would definitely arrange the longer layover.

If you can get email confirmation from Aegean that they will transfer your luggage from one flight to the other then 50 minutes is ample. This generalization of course is based on no departure delays.

Hunh? Whatever Aegean says about the luggage, if the first plane is late, with such a short layover both the bags and the passenger are unlikely to get on the second
flight.

What I meant was that the whole point is that you shouldn't assume there will be no departure delays. With a fifty minute layover, if the first flight's departure is delayed even fifteen or twenty minutes, you and/or your bags are likely to miss the second, and if it's delayed more than that, then that's all she wrote.

When I go onto the Aegean website and put in Chania to Santorini, the route posted has only that 50 minute layover. The ticket price is listed as over 100 Euros per person.
If I do it separtely, Chania to Athens comes up as 10 Euros and does Athens to Santorini.
So maybe I should do it separately and just tolerate a longer layover in Athens (4 hours!!)

I don't understand your question. Are you flying Aegean from Crete to Athens then flying Aegean to Santorini? If so, you won't have a problem as Aegean is on time and they will transfer your luggage.

I can't believe there is only one flight per day from Athens to Santorini.

The flight is not 10 E. There will be a tax and fuel charge which will make the ticket price much higher.

I have flown Aegean from Athens to Thessaloniki to Rodos to Athens. I never had a problem. However, I had very good weather.

Yes, I'm planning on flying Aegean from Chania to Santorini (via Athens)
With taxes, the 10 Euro flight comes to about $50.00 a person.
But when you look at Chania to Santorini it comes up at over 100 E (without taxes, etc)
Booking the legs separately they are 10E

Bettina, when are you travelling? One of your other posts says 4/11, but I'm not sure whether you mean Apr 11th or Nov 4th. MM is right that there is more than one flight to Santorini in the summer (three in fact), and this year's summer timetable shows three daily flights starting Mar 25th. Still, I am getting the same results as you on the website - one flight per day.

Either way, 50 minutes is doable only if everything goes right, with the Chania flight leaving on time, and no baggage delays at Athens Airport.

You can get a better deal booking your flights separately sometimes, as you have found out. If you book the flights together, though, Aegean will be obligated to put you on a later flight if they don't get you to Athens on time. Book the flights separately and I don't believe they have that same obligation.

wow, this is getting confusing!
I am traveling in April.
I wonder if I should wait a bit and see if the new schedule comes out with the 3 flights a day to Santorini?
I know what you mean about booking the flight together but right now, that seems ridiculously expensive compared to booking the flights separately?
What do people think....should I wait a bit?

You are flying in April? Why are you buying your tickets now? Of course there will be changes made to the flight schedule by April. I am sure more flights will be added and flight times could change.

Yes, Bettina, you should wait. The reason you don't see more flights is because next year's timetables have yet to be finalized. Just keep checking, you'll get them with plenty of time to spare and you shouldn't have any problem finding those 10 euro flights.

As to why I was buying my tickets now, I guess when I read on other posts that "if you booked early you could get good prices" I took it very literally so I was trying to "book early"
I guess I'm a compulsive plan ahead person.
