Query: imminent trip: Siena->Rome by bus? then get to Termini area
Hello and thanks for any help. After poring over the boards here, I've decided to stay at Hotel Aberdeen, about a 15' walk from RomaTermini.
I am also heeding the advice to consider the bus from Siena to Rome, rather than the bus back to Florence and then train to Rome.
(The whole trip looks like this: FCO-Termini-Ravenna; week in Ravenna for a course, then 4 days in Impruneta/Florence with friends, then 2 in Venice, then 1 night in Siena, then 2 nights in Rome.)
My query:
1. do you agree about taking the bus from Siena to Rome vs, going through Florence and catching a train there? (I couldn't get the site to give me the time for the bus, but assume it can't be more than bus->Florence->train->Rome).
2. Upon arriving now at Tiburtina, instead of Termini, do you suggest Metro to Termini and then the hotel (near Piazza Republica) or rather a taxi? I am a good walker, I will have a carry-on bag on rollers and a tote; I can't quite gauge the time/distance/cost by taxi, since i've never dealt with Tiburtina before, and I had assumed I'd come in by train and arrive at Termini.

As per www.sena.it buses leave from the Sena stop outside Siena Staz.FS (the train station) on Piazzale Rosselli at 14:18 (arr. Rome Tiburtina 17:05) and again at 20:18 (arr. 23:05)
There are two other stops in Rome before Tiburtina where you could get off, at RAI (16:57 or 22:57) and a Salaria - Lato Lancia 665 (at 17:00 or 23:00) - if you look those up you may find that you're closer to transportation to where you're going.
RAI is the state-run broadcast company - shouldn't be hard to locate.
From Tiburtina it takes 10 min by Metropolitana to Termini, lvg every 15 minutes.
Make google maps and www.viamichelin.com your friends, you can input locations and addresses and get very detailed maps, door-to-door and even on foot. And on Google, in street view, you can literally look around the neighborhood.

Thanks much; I am going to have to work with the sena site to get this sort of info; I have somewhat mastered Trenitalia but have a ways to go with the bus site. I use Google a lot but have less experience with viamichelin, which I associate that with auto travel, but will check it out.

There are lots of departures for the Sena bus from Siena to Rome each day. When you arrive Tiburtina you could probably catch a bus to Piazza Republica (Tiburtina is a big bus hub), but it's also easily walkable from Termini if you choose to take the metro. There is much construction in the metro underground at Termini right now so is rather confusing and sometimes involves detours/long walks. You can look at ATAC and enter your itinerary and it will tell you the bus # or exactly how to get the transportation you want. Use Piazza della Repubblica for the search.

I picked a random date and here are the stops.
28/09/2010 09:00 - SIENA (Colonna San Marco (fermata Sena))
28/09/2010 09:08 - SIENA (Piazza Gramsci (fermata Sena))
28/09/2010 09:12 - SIENA (Antiporto lato Snack Bar (fermata Sena))
28/09/2010 09:18 - SIENA (STAZIONE FS FERMATA SENA)
28/09/2010 09:22 - SIENA (Viale Toselli (fermata Sena))
28/09/2010 09:55 - BETTOLLE (Casello A1)
28/09/2010 11:57 - ROMA (Salaria RAI)
28/09/2010 12:00 - ROMA (Salaria, lato Lancia n° 665)
28/09/2010 12:05 - ROMA (AUTOSTAZIONE TIBURTINA)
If you click on the Siena/Rome that is blinking new it will roll over to Baltour to book. If you book 10 days in advance you can get the 10€ price. After it rolls over to Baltour you can click English. When you get to the fare selection click the down arrow and scroll down to select the 10€ fare. You must print your own ticket, not just have the code. I had to print one for each passenger. The driver will tear a section off when you board.

FYI - Piazza Gramsci has added electronic signs which update bus arrivals/departures and numbered the stops. I don't recall if the Sena bus was included or if it was more local buses. I was taking a local bus a few weeks ago so didn't really pay attention to Sena.
If you haven't been before, the piazza is more bus lot than piazza. The ticket office is underneath the piazza. Look for a ramp down on the shop side of the piazza if you need to ask them any questions. Luggage storage is available there if you need it.
