Queen's Day in Amsterdam or Haarlem or neither with kids?
 

We're considering making a weekend trip of Queen's Day and a trip to Keukenhof.
It would be our first time for both and I have concerns about taking my children to any Queen's Day celebration...

How old are the children?

The one time I went, the main streets and canals in Amsterdam were very busy, so there might be a problem keeping tabs on small children in crowds, but it all seemed very good-humoured. I rather think any trouble (if that's what you're worried about) happens around the Central Station and around the crowds collecting around large concert stages, and later in the day/evening. In side-streets and residential areas, it's more of a gigantic garage sale/ flea market.

The kids are 6 and 9. Just wondering if it's worth the trouble of getting into the city and through the crowds with the kids in tow.

I don't think you need to worry as there will be a lot of children around enjoying the celebrations too.
It is a great atmosphere.

I think your kids will like the less crowded parts of the town - of any town really - more than the inner city of Amsterdam during QD. Every town will feature the garage-sale like "free markets" and have plenty to do for the kids.

I wouldn't go there with kids. FInd a less crowded, smaller town where they can enjoy themselves and you don't have to worry so much about their whereabouts and safety. The atmosphere in Amsterdam can turn quickly on Queensday. Why not go to The Hague, or Haarlem, Leiden.

Maybe if you are from London Amsterdam's fast pace might be your 1st choice but for me Haarlem over Amsterdam any day. On the Queen's day it's busy everywhere. If it's not to your liking you can catch a train and be in Amsterdam in 15+ mins. Make sure you have accommodation.
