Quarto D'Altino as base to visit Venice?
 

I made reservations at the Villa Odino in Quarto D'Altino with the thought of going into Venice on two of three days. Some friends have discouraged me from doing that. I'm wondering if anyone else has done this; or what thoughts you might have on this idea. (I've also booked in Venice; but unfortunately could not find room at Pensione La Calcina or Pensione Accademia.)

Nance - It's only 25 mins by train into Venezia S. Lucia from Quarto D'Altino - so a day-trip is easy enough ...

Travelling to Venice wouldn't take that long, but the way Venice and its major sights are situatued make it one of the worst destinations in Europe for an enjoyable day trip. Many of those caught up in the daytripping herds each day end up with a negative view of the city.

Essentially masses of people arrive throughout the morning and funnel more-or-less along the Grand Canal to P. San Marco, the Rialto, and other major sights. Crowds, trash, lines--all the fate of daytripping cattle. Some people cope better than others.

One of the things we love most about Venice is the evenings. Once all the daytrippers leave, you almost feel like you have the city to yourself. The city is even more beautiful and enchanting at night. I personally would not dream of missing nights in Venice, therefore I would never choose to visit it solely on daytrip.

But considering how close you'd be, you could stay in Venice until pretty late in the evening and still get back to the hotel at a reasonable hour.
