There's a strip (no pun intended) of highway on the way to
Siena that had at least a dozen professionals plying their
trade under the Tuscan sun. They were posing on the edge of
the road and certainly provided an distraction from normal
highway driving. I presume this is the situation outside of
many towns.

We were told the customers were usually long-distance truckers
and the girls were from African countries.

LOL, charnees, I guess one could take the meaning either way.."you will find prostitutes if you are interested" or "warning, women standing by the side of the road are prostitutes" as though people couldn't figure that out. Sadly there are a lot of prostitutes standing around outside of the main centers of cities in Italy. And some of course are in the main city centers. A friend in Italy called me one evening, Italian time, and he suddenly started yelling and I asked "what is wrong?". His sport jacket, he had just left his office, was being pulled on by a "lady of the night" who wouldn't take no for an answer. Females from African countries and Eastern European countries and some from Central Europe. Very sad. But that sign is funny, charnees!

Yes, it's true the hookers are there by the side of the road. We have seen them, too.

Not as blatant as the young woman standing behind her car by a hotel in Nice, who had the shortest possible skirt on. She leaned provocatively into the trunk, revealing that she had no underwear on.

It is sad, and you wish you could do something to stop it.
