Purchasing tickets from Renfe
For anyone trying to purchase Spanish train tickets on Renfe.com and not having luck completing a transaction, download the app and complete your purchase through it. Renfe.com is maddening and I tried two different credit cards many times over without success. With the app, no problema!

Learning Renfe
Researching a trip we will take in November on an AVE with connection in Madrid. Interesting what one finds depending on website or app.
Renfe Website offers connecting trips but app seems to only sell direct routes so must buy ticket for each segment separately on app? I don't see anywhere to change settings to allow connections. Does it matter for protection for delays or problems if one or two separate bookings on Renfe AVE ? Trainline app and Petrabax.com will Show and sell the one train connection that arrives and departs Atocha as one one ticket but not ones arriving at the other Madrid station. That makes sense to me, but that means you have to search for segments separately on some apps and websites. I can see how people might end up with an Elige Confort when they think they are booking premium. On one trainline outlet the choice was first class but then later you could add cancel for any reason , changing from elige Confort to Premium. I suppose the odd Renfe system of ticket classes makes programming difficult for resellers. |

As a followup...I was just able to purchase my first ticket(s) on renfe website.
Trainline offered the route (one change at Atoche) on AVE for 159 Euros (plus whatever fee). Renfe offered the route (same trains but change in Cordoba) for 121 Euros. If join the Mas club, get 10% discount on first one-way, so 109. Created account(s) and charged to US credit card. No problems. We are purchasing expensive tickets because we have some time limitations but also wanted the flexibility of full cancellation. |
