In re-reading this thread it looks like someone indicated you can buy Malongo coffee in a grocery store so for reference, the .25 kg I bought of Guatemala Max at the Cafe was 4.50 euros.

The French don't drink "French" Coffee , in the same way the English don't eat "Creme Anglaise"

French roast is an American invention, like Freedom Fries.

I found this on the Kraft website...enjoy...

Cafe Francais:
Ingredients: NONDAIRY CREAMER [CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED COCONUT OIL, SODIUM CASEINATE (FROM MILK), DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR], SUGAR, INSTANT COFFEE, MALTODEXTRIN, SODIUM CITRATE, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, ARTIFICIAL COLOR

Carte Noire coffee is owned by Kraft, also (one of the premium supermarket brands kerouc named).

That brand (1851) is by Legal and the full name is "1851 Grand Arabica" . This is the URL and they still list is as a current brand (at left)

Thank you, thank you! I can picture myself now, sitting on "my" balcony, at "my" bistro table, enjoying many cups of the best homemade coffee I've ever had, while watching Parisian life go by!

4 days and counting!

Anyway, I used to bring all sorts of vacuum packed packages of coffee when I would visit my parents in Florida, and they loved every brand (including Monoprix or Leader Price), compared to those big cans of Maxwell House and Folger's that they had to buy otherwise.

The last apartment we rented in Paris has two cafetiere (French press)coffee makers and a Krups electric drip unlike any I had seen previously. The Krups made so-so coffee, but the press was great. To satisfy my morning cappuccino urge I brewed extra strong coffee in one press, nuked some milk in the glass vessel of the second and used the screened plunger to approximate steam foamed milk. Not exactly the same as my machine at home, but pretty darn good.
We used coffee picked up at Champions grocery store - think it was Carte Noire. Also tried the Lavazzza Mattino and found it lousy (too weak.)

"I do not recommend bringing ground coffee unless it is vacuum sealed because everything in the suitcase smelled like coffee. I had ground my own beans, triple zip locked them, and still had to take it out of the suitcase and put it in my carry on."

Not only that but some drug dealers pack the drugs in coffee in an attempt to disguise the smell from the sniffer dogs.

You might experience a delay at customs while the coffee is examined.

You never drink Starbucks in Europe as you like to try the local brands. Shame you drink Starbucks in the States whereby the local coffee houses and cafés have closed down because Starbucks have chewed them up.

Support your own local "mom and pop" places back home in the States. When in Europe, drink at the local places to support them too. This may help slow down Starbucks, Peats and whatever other chains take over local businesses. When I'm in the States, I try and find local privately owned coffee houses, but it's getting more and more difficult.

I agree with Kourac where the local supermarkets have a large selection of quality ground coffee.

Have you gone yet, sweetie darling, sweetie darling?

You absolutely MUST go over to Hediard near the Madeleine Church and buy some of their Cafe Moulu ground coffee. Thin highly suggests it and it comes in a pretty black can with a picture of the Tour de Eiffel on the front! You can use this can to store your valium, xanax, and percocet whilst on holiday.

You can get some nice mustard and tea at Hediard, also, sweetie darling.

Voyage a Paris!

Hello Thin. I'm leaving on Tuesday. Thanks for your recommendation. I promise to look for that beautiful black tin, if nothing more than to have a stylish place to hold my Paris stash!

Btw, I was thinking of you just yesterday as I perused a fashion magazine and admired many pairs of shoes designed by your namesake! Fabulous taste, darling!

Alas, TPaxe, I wish there was an independently owned coffee shop in my little corner of suburbia. I have 4 Starbucks within a 1 mi radius of my house - one of which is in a Bank in which the drive thru window is now used to dispense Starbucks! I could not believe my eyes this morning when I went by and the line of cars went around the bank! How ridiculous is that!

The Starbucks in downtown Campbell has closed. I never could understand why they opened when there were two other independent coffee shops and another chain on the same block.

While in Los Gatos Saturday I went to the Los Gatos Roasting Company and purchased some Costa Rican light roast beans that were excellent. I may be making regular trips.
