Puglia-Basilicata in spring 2014 suggestions for best timing?
 

Our goals are to avoid crowds, stretch our dollars, and absolutely to enjoy this region. We're considering going first 2 wks of April and leaving Italy prior to Easter. Or arriving in region a few days after Easter. Final thought is to wait until first 2 wks of May, which will be right after the canonization ceremonies in Rome. [we do not plan to spend any time in Rome, but wonder if all of Italy will be bustling at that time] Would there be much difference in weather conditions if we wait until early May? Any thoughts/advice will be greatly appreciated.

I think May is the best time to visit Puglia as the weather will be sunny but not too hot and you will be able to enjoy all beauties we have in my home region: from the countryside with all the flowers and poppies, the sea and beaches, and beautiful old towns.
I also love going to markets in May. When I organize my culinary and market tours my guests fall in love with the wonderful and delicious fruits and vegetables we have in May.

I would choose May also.

When I went to Puglia in early April a few years ago, I had rain and clouds every day. Not saying it's always like that, but it's probably more likely to rain in April than May.

Also, a few of the attractions, such as on the Gargano Peninsula, had not yet opened for the season in April.
