Looking for anyones thoughts and advise on visiting Puglia in May 2010. Thoughts on staying in a Trulli? Specials places to visit? Will stay for a week.

I have my own trip to Puglia planned in late April this year. I got lots of help here on the forum. If you do a search, you'll find my threads as well as quite a few others.

How old are you? How many people will be traveling? Ages? Likes? Dislikes? Preferred mode(s) of transport? Hotel budget? Why Puglia? Have you ever ben in Italy before? May 2010 is a distant future; is this a special ocassion?

I would try to visit all the DOC and IGT of Puglia

I agree with Masserias rather than Trulli. Puglia is fabulous. I know I have mentioned it before, but there is a local travel agent in Lecce who is fabulous (Andrea at salentotime.it. You might check his site to get ideas. Again, we need to know budget, time and you idea of a good vacation..I was there in the Spring of 2008 and biked for a week and then had a few quite day in Lecce.

Sorry I did not give enough information when I asked for advise.
We are two couples in our 60's, active and enjoy touring on our own. This will be my fourth trip to Italy and the other couples second. We will be first spending a week in Umbria, a week in Puglia and then five days in Rome. Will have a car in Umbria and Puglia. Day tripping, good food and wine, maybe a day of biking (not hills though), exploring small coastal towns and stopping by interesting churches ....Usually we like to return to our base for evening meal and relaxation. More thoughts welcomed on staying in a trulli...,many thanks for all the advise.

Puglia is made up of the coast and the Murg which is a plateau roughly 200m above sea level. Msny of the inland towns are another 100m up on old volcanic spurs.

There are trains up into the hill so you can take a lift into the interior and then wizz back.

I did a puglian bike trip on this site about 3/ 4 years back. Might be worth searching

We did an 11 day trip to Puglia in May 2007 and loved it. If you click on my screen name, look for a thread called "My Party in Puglia" and you will get a detailed trip report about the places we visited, stayed, ate.

Regarding staying in a trulli, from those we saw, it would seem a very uncomfortable, touristy adventure which in my opinion, is just not worth it. Visit a trulli instead and stay in any of the many fabulous agriturismos or B&B's that are available in all towns.

One of my favorite restaurants anywhere is the Grotta Palazzese in Polignano a Mare. You might consider having dinner there, or even spending the night!

Eat at La Cantina in Alberobello! It is very small, so arrive early or make a reservation. Kitchen right there in the open and the food is fabulous! We stayed at a lovely Trullo just outside of town for a few nights - easy to find and very convenient. (trullisanleonardo.it) Only 4 units and very private. All of Puglia is so lovely that we are making a return trip to the area this fall. Good luck!
