pubs near Waterloo Station
 

Are there any unique pubs near Waterloo Station? We'll be traveling back to Paris shortly after dinner, so we'll want to stop in a pub for something to eat before we leave London.

Nothing worthwhile anywhere nearby, imo. But why not pick up a catered dinner during the day, and a bottle of something nice - and picnic on the train?

Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nicks all have great foodhalls where you could get dinners-to-die-for . . . . if you happen to be stopping into a department store anyway during the day.

There is a normal pub just about the Eurostar concourse at Waterloo International, so you could have one last pint of real ale before you hit the train!

Anyone else have Waterloo walkable gastropubs?

There's an old converted fire house just south of Waterloo. I'm trying to remember the name, but it sounds like "fire station" or something like that. It's a big and kind of fun place. We once went for brunch on Sunday and had what was called the "big brunch", plates of stuff!

What time is your train to Paris? Lots of places don't serve dinner before 5 or 6pm . . .

Yea, I was right. The place I was talking about is called The Fire Station and is at 150 Waterloo Road.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips... I'll check out the Fire House. We could picnic, but we'd rather eat in a pub, more for the atmosphere than the food itself. You may be right...the food available for a picnic is probably much more tasty :-)

Here is another idea - from another thread you say on your day trip to London you are going to 221b Baker street. If you are big S. Holmes fans, consider going to the Sherlock Holmes Pub instead? it is much nearer to Waterloo, is an actual pub and has a small Holmes museum upstairs.

(I personally would not go up to Baker street during your very brief time in London - especially since you also want to see the Globe.)

Sorry... I just saw this. We are actually going to the Sherlock Holmes Pub for lunch :-) We had a special deal with the tour we're going on, so thought we'd check it out. The only reason I was looking for something near Waterloo is that we'll be leaving from Waterloo at about 6:30, so we'll need to stop on the way. I checked out Patrick's suggestion of The Fire House, near Waterloo, and that looks like a good choice for us.

Go one bridge down to Blackfriars Bridge and there's a fab pub on the other side of the river, called the Black Friar - one of my favourite in town. It's a sort of Art Deco grotto inside. Otherwise, as someone mentioned, there's little around Waterloo apart from the Fire Station (which is good but gets v noisy and crowded and isn't really a pub in the sense that you might mean. But it is close to the station).

ealing_calling is soo behind the times - there's loads of good places near Waterloo.

Top of the list is a new Gastro (ie good food) pub called the Anchor & Hope, address 36 The Cut SE1, voted the Carlton Restaurants Awards best Gastro Pub in London 2004. Here's a review:

It's a 5 minute walk from Waterloo. For its location, look up www.streetmap.co.uk and key in The Cut under London Street

Erm, you're giving away too good of a tip - the place is too crowded for its own good post-publicity! - and, with increased check-in times at Waterloo + no reservations at pubs, didn't want to let this one slip . . .

Actually, we might be close to Black Friar Pub, as we want to see the Globe Theater. I plugged in the two addresses on www.mappy.com, and it looks like it couldn't be more than a half hour walk from Black Friar Pub. Mappy says 20 min., but I always allow for more time.

We're only in London for a day, so we want to find at least one good pub on our own. We're already set up for the Sherlock Holmes Pub for lunch.

We're going to try to stop at the Black Friar pub just for a beer -- or do you order lager? -- as it won't work for dinner. Food is only served until 2:30, according to a couple of websites, but I'd like to see it anyway :-) Here are some photos of it:

Black Friar Pub won't work for us for dinner, as I found out that they don't have food at dinner, but we'll definitely try to stop there for a beer -- or do you say lager? I'd love to just see it... here are some photos of it:
