Public Transport - Mosel River

My google skills are failing me so I need some fodorite help!

We will be in the Rhine/Mosel region for 5 nights this September. We would like to base in Cochem but I have been unable to find any 2bedroom apartments available for our group. I did find one nice affordable 2bedroom apartment in the city of Valwig just a few kilometers away. We will not have a car (and really don't want to rent one!) but is there decent transport to/from Cochem to Valwig? I have no problems walking the 4km but would like decent alternatives in case of rain or just being exhausted after a long day!

Thanks for any help! I know I need to book quick!

poppet,if you'd like to stay at a winery in the Mosel, I can recommend apartments in the town of Ellenz-Poltersdorf. The B&B Weingut Clemens has one and two bedroom apartments. We were there 5 nights this May with a car but we were given free vouchers to ride any of the buses within the Mosel vicinity for the length of our stay. We did take the bus to Cochem because the parking was a nightmare the first time we tried to visit

We met a group of ladies from Sweden who were staying at the B&B without a car and they seemed to have no problem getting around using the bus.

We enjoyed our stay along the Mosel and certainly enjoyed the wine.

Have a great trip, Deborah

Back to your original question, which I had to postpone answering... Bus 716 gets you into Cochem from the Valwig stop pretty easily on weekdays. It's 8 minutes to the Endertplatz stop in the middle of town. On Sat and Sun there are 4 and 5 buses per day respectively.

Schedule:
http://www.vrminfo.de/uploads/tx_vdvtimetable/716.pdf

If you're using a VRM (local transit authority) daypass to travel by train to other towns from Cochem, the same pass is good on the bus from Valwig - so just buy one from the bus driver. A 1-day pass (mini-group ticket) for 2-5 is 20€, a 3-day pass 40€. Details here:

Thank you!!!

I did contact 2 of the apartments listed so now I am just waiting. If they are not available we will go with the one in Valwig. Thank you for the bus information....makes me feel better!

september is busy nut not the busiest season - I think with Russ' helpful links you should be able to find a place in Cochem proper - or Cond - same city practically, just across the Mosel bridge from Cochem proper.

And yes like Russ says buses run up and down the Mosel frequently enough and many hotels also provide bikes to guests and the bike paths along the river are one of Europe's primo biking venues. You can rent bikes in Cochem and say bike upstream to Beilstein, at arguably the prettiest part of the Uber pretty Mosel. In season boats also float between Belistein and Cochem.
