Cyber, Fodors Rome app is good too, and free. It includes restaurants as well. Instead of Wikipedia, it uses Fodors guidebook descriptions, not necessarily better, but different. I'm just doing a comparison of it with Rome2go.
It seems you cannot enter your own restaurants, hotels etc on Fodors app but I could be wrong. |
Thanks, sundried! When I searched for that app, I discovered that I already had it! So, now I'm downloading offline maps, and this gives me some time to play with the app before we go.
I'm almost all packed, and still have 2 more days, so now I'll have time to do more research! :-) |
cybertraveler, we are also going to be staying at the same hotel in August (see my other posts :):)
I am curious about your restaurant pics for dinner, since I didn't see many comments on that yet. Did you already book them? How did you choose these places? Based on the proximity to your hotel ? I would appreciate your feedback, because my itinerary looks very similar to yours :) i am also going to figure out how to download google maps that doesn't need wifi or data plan :) Have a fantastic trip, your boys are lucky :) Shubha |
Hi Shubha-I picked the restaurants based on Trip Advisor top picks that were near our hotel, and one that was near the Trevi Fountain. I might re-check them, based on what I've learned through the planning process (ie: check Chowhounds!)
Here are the restaurants within a short distance of the hotel: Pietro al Pantheon Via dei Pastini 125, 00186 Rome Italy 0039 06 6789940 Casa Coppelle Piazza delle Coppelle 49, 00186 Rome, Italy 06/68 89 1707 Al Duello Viccolo della Vaccarella, 11, Rome, Italy +39 06 6873348 This one is around the corner from the Trevi Fountain: La Fontana di Venere Vicolo De' Modelli 56, Rome, Italy +390669924087 Other posters have recommended some different restaurants above, as well. If anyone else has other restaurant suggestions, I'd be very happy to have them. We received amazing help on the Positano section of the trip (pt. 4) Hope this is helpful. So far, my son hasn't been able to figure out how to download Google maps to iPhones, iPods, etc. When he does, I'll start a new post. If you figure it out, please let me know. Have a wonderful time in Rome-maybe we'll see each other on the rooftop bar! |
cyber, I think Obika isn't too far from your hotel - we had a great meal there the last 2 trips. Modern and pretty casual - with an amazing Mozzarella sampler plate!

cybertraveler, here is what I figured out this afternoon through hard work :)
Once you are done with your map, there is a link button on the top right corner. Click that and send an email to yourself. Once you get that email, click that link on your iPhone and it opens a map webpage. Now, click on the arrow on the bottom of the page and select "Add to Home Screen" option. Vola, now it adds an icon on your iPhone with a direct link to that map. Hope that helps, mine is a new found knowledge too.. I will check out the restuarnants. Somehow, I am not able to find Pietro al Pantheon on google maps to add to my list :) Thanks Shubha |
Shubha, I believe that map link needs wifi or 3G to open the map, as it is just an Internet link. Turn off your wifi and see if the map opens, to test it.
|
Yep, you are right .. May be its using my 3G..
|
Thanks-so it still looks like we're stuck with printing it out. However, I do have one more trick up my sleeve...
Another workaround I have used in the past is to click Print on the map, but then instead of printing when the print screen comes up, select "Save as PDF" from the drop-down menu (on Mac, there is a PDF drop down menu in the lower left corner. Then you could save the PDF to iPhoto or some other app and have it on your device. I'm going to try that now, and I'll let you know later what success I have! |
Hi cybertraveler, I am so envious of your trip, lucky you and your family to spend that much time in Italy. You will love it.
I can recommend a tour guide for the Colosseum and Forum that is very good and reasonably priced. We have used Angel Tours several times and referred them to many many people. Everyone had positive feedback. Here is the website: http://www.angeltoursrome.com/index.php The meeting place for the Colosseum tour and other info is right on their website. I believe you can PayPal, credit cards, etc. Your sons would love the Eco City Tour also as they travel around Rome in a golf cart! Quite a different way to see Rome. Check them out. Also check out Trip Advisor for reviews of their tours. You would be pleased! May |
cybertraveler, I was away and offline for a few days, and am so sorry I left you hanging! I'm replying now on the off-chance you check in here while abroad... (and for the others).
It didn't occur to me that the offline google maps comment would be confusing - but it turns out you had good reason. The super-easy "save to offline" feature that I was thinking of is only available for Android! In google maps on Android, literally all you do is tap Options, and it's there in the list. Some info from Google, FWIW: https://support.google.com/gmm/bin/a...9131&ctx=topic If I'm not mistaken, today is the first full day of your trip! I hope your flight went well. It must be SO exciting to be experiencing Italy after all that planning!! Best wishes, ggreen |
