OK, enough on the research already. For those of you insisting Pam had a problem with research, maybe she has a life outside of traveling. Surely others hold fulltime jobs as well. I have a few travel guides, but I don't read them from cover to cover. I actually have other responsibilities. I search this board, read a couple chapters, and hope for the best. It supposed to be a vaction. Thanks to Pam, I now know about several things I didn't know before. Cab charges, cover charges, etc. I will be expecting them, and I won't be miffed. It may actually make my upcoming trip better because of it.

Hess, good explanation of the coperto charge, as a charge for -- as Frommer's website puts it -- the "privelege" of renting space at a restaurant table.

Personally, I don't have a problem with coperto -- or any other charges -- in a restaurant, as long as they're stated on the menu. However, IMO, it's bad form if a restaurant doesn't list a coperto charge and then puts it on the bill.

In Pam's case, she claims that a restaurant they went to, La Taverna Etrusca in Sovana, was the "biggest rip-off" of their trip, in large part because, she says, they charged 3 euros/person for coperto and also 6 euros for "a basket with four slices of ordinary Italian bread."

Now, IMO, as long as both the coperto and pane charges were listed on the menu, it's kind of hard for her to claim they were "ripped off" when they agreed to those terms by deciding to remain there and eat. (I will concede, however, that one might reasonably expect more than four slices of bread for 6 euros, if that's, in fact, all the bread they got.)
