Provence via train; no car; good location for older couple

My in-laws are taking the train from Paris to somewhere in Provence this September. They are in their 80's and so will not be renting a car but would like to stay in a town or smaller city (Aix? Avignon?)at nice hotel within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and then hire a driver for some touring of Provence. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Avignon is about as centrally located as you can get. There are trains to Arles, l'Isle sur la Sorgue, Nimes, Marseille.

Aix is not as centrally located.

Avignon or Arles

both great rail links

dreamy old Provencal towns - Avignon a bit bigger

Great base even for public transport

Avignon-Arles trains take 20 mins
Buses to Pont du Gard
investigate tours to nearby places like Les Baux, St Remy, etc.

Research Arles (Van Gogh put a lot of it on canvasses) and Avignon, famous for its Palace of the Popes and its broken bridge - Sur le pont d'Avignon, etc.

Aix is a fine city but Arles or Avignon are easier to base in by public transit and lots around a short distance

I say Avignon. Just out side the walls (and Hotel D'Europe) is the train and bus stations
