Provence/Nice Questions
We will be traveling in Provence and Nice in July.
1)What is the drive like from Moustiers-Ste-Marie to Eze? 2)Is the restaurant Chantecler worth the visit? Thank you. |

There are many routes you can take to get there. All are scenic. My favorite is south through Aups (visit), then to Tourtour (visit), then to Ampus, Chateaudouble (scenic), north on D995 (scenic), east on D19 to Bargmon (visit), then Fayance (visit), Tourrettes (visit if you have time), then take the D562 to the D37 then the freeway to Eze. 2)Is the restaurant Chantecler worth the visit? Visit, or to dine there? It's quite beautiful. I've never dined there - the prices scared me off!!! Poked my head inside a few times. Stu Dudley |
The Le Negresco Hotel and it's famous
dining room, Chantecler, Where Russian Princes dined in the last century was featured on Rudy Maxa's program on PBS last Sunday. Over the top opulent. Like a Grecian Urn, I can appreciate its beauty but not want to own it. :) |
We had lunch at Chantecler back when Jacques Maximin was the chef and had the best meal of our entire lives. But Maximin is long gone, and I think the restaurant has had some turnover in chefs in the past few years.

If you are driving from Moustiers St. Marie to Eze, do not miss the Canyon Verdon. There is a northern or southern route through the canyon. It is absolutely spectacular. The roads wind in and out but it shouldn't be missed. Pointe sublime is unreal. It takes about two hours to go through the canyon, since it is hard to drive very fast. A few places to stop on the road and eat a picnic lunch you have prepared. Look at the guide books on this canyon. Good luck

Also, if you are in Moustiers, there is a wonderful faience artisan I met on my last trip. She is on the main road ( not up on the top of the mountain where the Moustier town is) on the way to the canyon. Quartier embourgues - Route de Riez. 04360 Moustiers. Bleu Cobalt. Her name is Mireille and very charming. She has the most beautiful and original faiences I have ever seen. You want to buy everything in her shop. Don't miss this place.

We had dinner at Chantecler a few years ago and absolutely loved it. The food and service was superb.
|
We also had the best meal of our lives at Chantecler several years ago. It was the "Menu de la Mer" tasting menu at lunch. Normally, we shun tasting menus but this one was to die for.
Different chef now, so I don't know what's up with it now. |
The Chantecler seems to be a jumping-off point for very good chefs. I can't imagine a less than excellent dining experience there.
