Provence - need help on bases

In late May, my husband and I are flying into CDG from JFK and then taking the high speed train to Avignon arriving around 6 p.m. Plan to stay in Avignon that night and the next night. Then on Day 3 will rent car to tour the Provence area. We want to visit he Luberon area, Aix-en-Provence, Cassis, Saint Rémy and Les Baux de Provence. I prefer not to change hotels every day. We will have 6 full days to tour the area. We will be taking the train from Avignon back to Paris. Perhaps two bases? What towns would you suggest?

Any other help is always appreciated. TIA.

I'm not a good source of information about bases, but even so, you might find some useful ideas in my trip reporrt:

It's a wonderful area -- enjoy!

DH and I took the TGV from Paris to Avignon and went directly to Aix via busses at the Avignon station.

We stayed at the Hotel Aquabella and loved it. We took van tours to the places you mentioned so didn't drive. There was a parking garage right there though. It's off the ring road that may be scary at first!

Have a great time and please report back!

Here is my standard reply about bases.

If you want to visit a smallish town with lots of Cafes, shops, tourists, and English spoken - stay in St Remy. If you would rather be in the countryside surrounded by vineyards, lavender, rolling hills, but perhaps drive in the car to get dinner - stay in the Luberon near Gordes, Bonnieux, Menerbes, or Roussillon.

If you want two bases - split the time between both.
