Provence - Michelin Green Guide
 

Does anyone know if Michelin will be coming out with an updated version of their Provence book? The one out now I think is from 2000. I'm sure it's ok to use but I'd like to have a more current listing of times and $$$.

There seem to be 100s of books out there on Provence ... any good suggestions as to the best ones to get for planning a trip to Provence? I'm familiar with Germany & Switzerland but a beginner when it comes to Provence.

That is pretty old. I don't use guidebooks too much for pricing, anyway, except for general ideas of budget very expensive, and that kind of ranking would probalby still be fine.

I like the Cadogan guide to Provence and Cote d'Azur. It was published in 2004. I like that and the Michelin best. I think your Michelin would still be good for the general maps and rating of sites to see and things like that.

For my trip to Provence and the Cote d'Azur last May I used the Rick Steves and the Lonely Planet guidebooks. The LP book (2003 edition) was more comprehensive and I found it very helpful. A new edition was published last spring.

The Fodor Guide to Provence is also good. I'm never sure about the dates--my Green Guide to the Côte d'Azur seems to date from 2001, but it looks considerably newer. The folks at Barnes & Noble or Amazon ought to be able to give some indication of when newer guides might be out.

I just sent off a query to the people at Michelin; we'll see if I get a reply.

Underhill, thank you for sending an inquiry. I did try calling one time (another question regarding another book) and I ended up speaking to someone who said he didn't know the answer. I got the feeling he didn't want to be bothered. :)

My Green Guide to Provence was published in '02. Perhaps they publish fresh ones ever two years.

I have over 7 feet of shelf space for all by travel books about France - and another 3 feet for maps. My second favorite is the Cadogan guide for the South of France

I use this site for ordering books & Maps. They might indicate the publication date.

I agree about the Cadogan Guide--very useful if you're interested in regional history as well as sightseeing.

Just ignore the prices in whatever edition of the Green Guide that you have--you can usually pull those up from web sites, along with opening times (I assume you mean of sightseeing spots?).

I went ahead and ordered the Michelin Green Guide for Provence and Paris. As you all said, I can go on the individual sites and get prices and times.

It's amazing how much cheaper it is to buy them off of Amazon with free shipping than it is in the stores! Of course I have to wait a few more days to get them, but no big deal. I love travel books so I'm probably on the path to collecting as many as Stu. :)

I purchased "French Country Hideaways" this past Fall (Rizzoli is the publisher) and although the places are a bit more upscale .. I love the pictures.

I just found out that Michelin is releasing the 5th edition of the Michelin Green Guide - Provence on February 28, 2006
