provence in the rain

planning trip to provence in sept. notice tends to rain a bit in sept. most of activities seem to be outdoors. any ideas on things to see and do if it rains? museums?
(besides read a book, leisurely meal, etc.).

thanks

Joanel, you might want to visit the website www.provencebeyond.com While it includes the cote d'azure which probably won't interest you, it also has good info on the area you're interested in. Museums are a good option as well as shopping!

you are right. It starts raining a lot after mid-september to mid-october. It doesn't rain all the time, but when it does it is really pouring. Most of the floods happen at this time of the year.

If it rains, that's a good day to visit the Palais des Pape in Avignon. It is huge, you can spend hours in it.

You can also go to a gourmet to enjoy a three hour long lunch.

You can also go shopping... why not try a french mall. Once again if you are near Avignon , their is a big Auchan there. People go there from 60 miles away. It is a short of big wallmart super center with regional produce and small stores in the mall area. Beware ! if you are there the first weeks of September (especially wednesday and saturdays), it is pack with people buying school items...

In the ten years we have been going to Provence we only had one September with almost daily of rain.

The outdoor weekly markets are still conducted unless very windy. The Wednesday one in St. Remy is great 8am to 1pm. If you are an antiquer, the Sunday market in Ils sur Sorgue would be fun.

In Aix-en-Provence you can take a Cezanne tour to his attelier. You could shop in artisans stores in most villages.

Good luck.
