Try Forcalquier.

TRY Les Clos du Buis B&B in Bonnieux. It's got the magic star in Fodor's and we were just there two weeks ago, highly recommended. Two hotels, one small grocery, Il Fournil which is a GREAT restaurant and some others we didn't try. It may look way out east on the map but it's within minutes of Avignon, centrally located for exploring the Luberon, back road to Aix if you wish. If the owner is offering (he doesn't cook often) the Table d'Hote, take it! It's 2/3 of your price range....

Fournil is one of my favorites restaurants as is the village of Bonnieux and also Lourmarin.

Lourmarin is a great, small, beautiful village about 50 kms from St. Remy. Lot of nice little restaurants, hotels in area. Have only briefly visited, plan to return in July for lunch, photo-ops. This is really a gem as also recommended by Cigalechanta, St. Cirq and many of the other nice Fodor's posters.
