Provence - base?
We are considering a trip to Provence in Fall, 2012 for 2-3 weeks. Any suggestions for 1-2 base towns?
|
I suggest St Remy so you can visit the Perche villages and
the Camargue, Nimes and Uzes. Later maybe base in Lourmarin or Bonnieux to visit that area. Three weeks is better to get the feel of these two different areas |
We just spent a week in St. Remy and loved it as a base. From there we did the Cote du Rhone/Chateauneuf de Pape wine region, Avignon, Port du Gard, Aix, and the Luberon villages.
|
If you have that much time I'd suggest one base in the Bouches-du-Rhône and another in the Lubéron.

A few years ago, I stayed for over a week in Aix. Unfortunately, Aix is a bit too far away from the places we wanted to go, to recommend this city.
Great city, though. |
I don't know why American's think the distances are far in Provence. We thought nothing of driving to friends in Haute
Provence or lunch in Marseille. |
Our week with Uzes as a base worked out very well. It is an interesting walled village. Enjoy.

cigalechanta - Personally speaking, it's a couple of hours to Avignon from Aix, each way.
Love the toll roads, wish we had roads a smooth as glass in the U.S. I just don't think, on holiday, that traveling 2-4 hours a day is what I would call relaxing. |
