Provence and the French Riviera--what driving maps to purchase?

We are planning a fall trip to Provence and to the French Riviera. We will fly into Nice and rent a car. What driving maps do you recommend? We plan to explore Nice, Cannes, St Raphael, Arles, and Avignon. This will be our first trip to this area.

Thanks very much.

Here is the Michelin site...all their maps are there to look at...decide which ones you want and you can order them from the site...

We just returned and our car came equipped w/ GPS-it was beyond amazing and we were able to just type in our destination:Avignon for example and off we went. I don't think we'll ever rent in Europe again without that amazing machine!

Start with the Michelin map that covers all of Provence (which includes the Côte d'Azur/French Riviera). Then if you wish you can supplement the principal map with smaller regional ones.

I will also be driving around Provence. I have an older Michelin map #246. I have read on this thread that they no longer print the 200 maps. How much will roads have changed? Can I get by with this map or should I purchase a newer version?

The roads have changed somewhat around Nice--lots of recent construction. But if you know the basics you shouldn't have any trouble using an old map--that's what we did last September. And you can always get updates on mappy.com or viamichelin.com to supplement your maps.

I've just about worn out my Michelin #113, which cover Arles, Avignon, Nimes and more. For Toulon and Draguignan you'll need #114, and for Nice and San Remo, #115. I bought my maps at Borders Book Shop for $9.95 each. Happy Driving!

if you have the room, you could just get a Michelin Atlas for all of France. I paid something like 20 dollars for mine and it covers the whole country - the detail is the same as the fold out maps.

granted, it's a big atlas, but if you are going to have a car, it's not a big deal to haul it around and it's nice to have. it fits flat in my 22 inch rollie, too.
