If you do want to go to Marseille on the day you fly out, I would suggest parking in the Bourse garage near the Vieux (old) Port, walking 5 minutes to the white Petit (small) Train that leaves from the port and goes up to Notre Dame de la Garde via the coast road. You will see the best of Marseille in about 2 hours: guided commentary in 5 languages, great sea and island views, fantastic 360 view of the whole city and the sea and the hills from the basilica, which has beautiful mosaic columns and ceiling plus model ships hanging from the ceiling and colorful and touching ex voto paintings and marble plaques giving thanks for safe return from storms at sea.

I have been reading some other forums commenting on how horrible the traffic will be in St. Tropez. so I have decided to cut it out of the trip. Although my friend would be upset, I'm the one who will be driving the entire time... so I had to consider my own sanity.

I booked a two night stay in Nice @ Hotel de la Fontaine.
Peace - Thanks for your trip report. I checked out the hotel and they were fully booked as most of other hotel suggestions I've read on the forum. The ones available were either ridiculously expensive or cheap with very bad reviews.

Thursday will be all Nice after our arrival from the airport.
Friday - I'm now questioning if I should go east, or west? East - Cap Ferrat, Eze, Monaco. or West - St. Paul de Vence, Gourdon, Antibes, and Cannes (if we even have time)?
Saturday - We will be driving to AIX in the morning and check out the town all day. Have place two request on hotels so hopefully I will hear back soon.
Sunday - Original thoughts were St. Remy since everything is open on Sundays. Anything else we should include?
Monday - Marseille in the morning if we have time but I don't think we will since our flight is at 1pm.

Thanks all for making this trip happen so last minute!

I just spent about four days in Marseille and it isn't one of my favorite cities, but you could easily spend a morning there to see some things. However, I think that would be workable only if you stayed overnight in Marseille the night before, and stayed in a hotel in a prime location right on the port. That's okay to do, that's where I stayed and there are several decent hotels down there. Otherwise, I would never drive into Marseille from elsewhere to see it if I had a flight at 1 pm from Marseille airport.
