Girlspy-- I guess part of this depends on how well you dress at home? Maybe the OP's mention of a t-shirt got you started on this...

When you say "and that MEANS not going as casual as you would at home" - that makes the assumption that we all dress in jeans and t-shirts at home & plan to do so in Europe... which is simply not the case.

So when I said no one cares what you wear, I am thinking of the average person on the streets of Italy, witnessing a reasonalby well dressed tourist. Who cares? I'm surprised you say you do in your own home city.

Good point, Suze. As a native San Franciscan, I've seen plenty of "inappropriate" tourist attire, but I can't say I've ever been personally, socially, or psychologically offended by it. If the person looks like he's having a good time here, if he's contributing to the economy even minimally, and if he's not abusing persons or property, I can only smile. My only passionate reaction is for those who've ignored the well-founded advice to bring warm jackets in July...

LucieV- That's why they sell all that fleece down at Fisherman's Wharf!

When I see tourists here in Seattle, I only take note of what they are (or are not) wearing since I have been a poster here on Fodor's. Funny, huh?

"That's why they sell all that fleece down at Fisherman's Wharf!" Ain't it the truth?!

('Course, anybody who's here **this** particularly beautiful October weekend isn't needing any fleece...well, 'cept in the early morning when they're walking their dog on Baker Beach!)
