Proper attire...church

Have read that when visiting the churches in Italy one must wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees...is this for both men and women?
Thanks

Respect for the church doesn't differentiate between the sexes!

Yes. At the Vatican, for example, they have ushers checking the attire and will refuse admission to those not dressed appropriately. Pardon the pun, put dress as though you are going to church.

Shoulders and knees must be covered. One suggestion is to wear the slacks that unzip to shorts. For women, if they carry a large scarf to put on their shoulders, it's easy and totally acceptable. But no shorts for anyone.

Howard is correct, here, shorts and bare shoulders are a definite no-no in the churches of Italy, for men and women alike. Of course, it's also customary for men to remove their hat inside.

Use a common sense approach to it and you'll be fine.

As others have posted..covered shoulders and knees pretty much prevail and the rules are particularly enforced at St. Peter's. I do have to say, though, HowardR, that it is unfortunate that the Church does differentiate between the sexes even though it demands respect from us all...sigh!

Can I wear red underwear underneath?

Jumbo,

You may wear red underwear, but not if it shows through.

Wear black slacks.
