Pronunciation of San Gimignano

How do you pronounce the town of San Gimignano? My husband and I visited this quaint little town for a day during the summer and loved it. However, now when we show our pictures we fumble over the pronunciation of the town that we loved outside of FLorence. I would greatly appreciate any phonetic help.

I'm so glad someone asked this! We took a quick spin through the city while we were on a wine tasting spree, and I've resorted to calling it

SAN GImuhmiggganano

(i.e. sort of quietly slurring and mumbling the name because I didn't know how to say it correctly!).

Great question. My husband and I went there this summer, and we practiced saying it for a whole day before we went. Then we were so disappointed in it that we couldn't wait to get out after a couple of hours! Tourist trap is right! Quaint little town? Not.

Jahoulih has it down perfectly.

Sahn-gee-mee-nyah-no

I don't know if it's a tourist trap or not. Last time I was there was 20 years ago and it was untrammeled and absolutely wonderful. I guess two decades can make a big difference.

Not a tourist trap at all. I was there in 2000. It is another charming hill town of Italy. They have all the tourist shops like anywhere else but the place is beautiful.

Shar

Agree with Shar. didn't think it was a tourist trap at all. Stayed there for two nights in July and enjoyed every second.

Shar:

If you say that San Gimignano is not a tourist trap (at least not more than any other place) you have probably never been in a place that is not a tourist trap. Just drive off the too beaten track and drive, for instance, to Santa Fiora. That is one place I would call NOT a tourist trap, but it is still a really charming place.
