Problems?

Is there a problem with the web site?

J62 May 14th, 2006 12:10 PM

I've been having problems to day with Firefox, but IE7 seems to be working ok.

mcnyc May 14th, 2006 12:12 PM

Not for me today...so far. Most of yesterday however, I had a devil of a time on the left side of the screen. I was unable to access general recent posts. All I could do was click on my name and get a listing of my recent posts.

Is that your problem today? :(

Maire May 14th, 2006 12:13 PM

Yes, I've been having probs with Fodor's today.

xyz123 May 14th, 2006 12:17 PM

All bloody day...the left side gives the web site unavailable message...I got on finally but I did earlier and then the problem came up again.

What the devils is going on?

cigalechanta May 14th, 2006 12:43 PM

Yes, yesterday and today on the post side it will read 500 NULL and not able to post.

xyz123 May 14th, 2006 12:54 PM

This is the message:

HTTP 500 - Internal server error
Internet Explorer

Guy18 May 14th, 2006 01:04 PM

It's been saying 500 NULL for me too. Can pull up my own posts though. Most annoying.

rkkwan May 14th, 2006 01:26 PM

I had the same problem with the left-side column starting yesterday or Friday. I use MacOSX, and I realized it only affected Mozilla, not Safari.

That led me to think it's a Java problem. I went to www.java.com and verified that one of my browser was using an older version of Java. After upgrading, everything's fine.

So, go follow instructions to download the latest Java for your particular operating system. That should solve the problem.

rex May 14th, 2006 01:34 PM

Got rid of it by totally shutting down and restarting my computer.

Nora_S May 14th, 2006 02:00 PM

I'm having trouble today---was looking for a place to report it. I can only get to the discussions from the opening "talk" page by clicking on one of the featured discussions (I use the "canal view in Venice worth it?") From there, I can move around by clicking on names. But the left side list never shows up---just says "error". We use Mozilla and today is the first time I've had this trouble. I tried exiting the website and coming back, but that doesn't help. I'll try shutting down and re-starting the computer.

Scarlett May 14th, 2006 03:39 PM

The only way I can get on Fodors is to go to a link that someone sent me in email. Then I have to click on a name to find lists on the left. Otherwise, it says that error message..this has been since yesterday.

Happy Mothers Day!

Scarlett May 14th, 2006 03:40 PM

<head><title>JRun Servlet Error</title></head><h1>500 null</h1><body>
</body>

<i>This is the message that is where the list of threads should be</i>

rkkwan May 14th, 2006 05:38 PM

JRun refers to Java Runtime. That's why I said one needs to upgrade/update Java on the computer and get your browser to use it.

Simply restarting the computer is not going to help. I tried.

Underhill May 14th, 2006 05:47 PM

Most of the time today all I got was a &quot;page unavailable&quot; notice.

susanna May 14th, 2006 05:59 PM

Still having the problem too...

cigalechanta May 14th, 2006 06:15 PM

since yesterday, my 500 NULL coms and goes

Betsy May 14th, 2006 06:21 PM

It is (was?) affecting Safari also....

rkkwan May 14th, 2006 07:20 PM

I am tell you all again. I have the same problem as you all do all day yesterday, but not every single time.

No problem since I get the latest Java. [For those using some Netscape/Mozilla-based browser, one needs the MRJ plugin as well.]

For those using MacOSX 10.4.x, you can download Java here:

www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26564

And to use non-Safari browser, the plug-in is here:

www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23790

For the latter, you need to manually move the two items from the &quot;Binaries&quot; folder to your /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder.

Once you've done all of them and restart your broswer, go to www.java.com to verify it. It should list your Java Runtime Version as 1.5.0_06. Even though it will say you do NOT have the latest version of Java, that IS the latest one.

cigalechanta May 14th, 2006 07:35 PM

For those of us who know nothing abot the basics of our PCs I appriciate but do not understand any of it?

rkkwan May 14th, 2006 07:40 PM

Let me add that for those using Mac OSX and Safari, I believe as long as you update your system regularly using the built-in &quot;Software Update&quot;, you should have the latest Java on it already.

CAPH52 May 14th, 2006 08:12 PM

Besides the 500 Null thing, I keep getting the &quot;this page cannot be displayed&quot; message. Very frustrating!

CAPH52 May 14th, 2006 08:43 PM

I confess to being pretty computer illiterate. But when I followed your link, rkkwan, it said there was no product match for windows. There must be some other solution. I have to think with so many people having problems, there must be something Fodor's can do.

MarkvonKramer May 14th, 2006 08:50 PM

I've cleared my cache and cookies to correct the problem. I'm using Mozilla, if that has any bearing on the situation and my silly &quot;fix&quot;.

rkkwan May 14th, 2006 09:10 PM

I don't use a Windows machine at home, so I can't really help you guys. But the Java downloads, instruction, and verification for Windows can be found here:

http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Guy18 May 14th, 2006 10:10 PM

rkkwan--I followed your link and downloaded java. So far, so good...

Thanks!

Heimdall May 14th, 2006 11:49 PM

Best solution I have found when this problem occurs: 1) turn off computer; 2) make cup of coffee; 3) get out that good book I have been neglecting.

worldinabag May 15th, 2006 02:43 AM

Quite clearly there are lots of Fodor's junkies just like me. Back on my fix. Mmmmmm, everythings's fine now.....No.9, No.9, No.9, No.9

rkkwan May 15th, 2006 04:58 AM

Well, it just happened to me once again. OSX running Mozilla, even after updating my Java. So, that means something else's going on.

JeanneB May 15th, 2006 05:09 AM

rkkwan:

<i>For those using some Netscape/Mozilla-based browser, one needs the MRJ plugin as well.</i>

What is &quot;MRJ plugin&quot;?

Areala May 15th, 2006 05:10 AM

WOW...I just got back on and found this thread. Glad it wasn't just me. I was thinking it's my computer or my internet but I was getting everywhere else OK...All I could get was my own posts.

Finally I just re-booted and all seems to be OK now. I usually just leave my computer on 24/7 and re-boot once or twice a week. Our computer guy at work told me I needed to do complete shut downs from time to time.

Oh well, I'm just a girl....what do I know...I got it working now so heh..that's all that matters.

rkkwan May 15th, 2006 05:26 AM

JeanneB - Again, I don't know about Windows machine, but if you're using Mozilla-based browser on the Mac OSX, you need two small pieces of file as I desribed to let your browser know to use the installed Java.

Sorry, I didn't make this clear, but I am only helping those using Mac OSX here.

cw May 15th, 2006 05:36 AM

Marking so I can retrieve the thread. I still can't see anything in the left hand column. Using MAC OS X, software is updated.

Problem is back...site is messed up...why don't they fix it.

Betsy May 15th, 2006 06:22 AM

Here's hoping they're busy working on the problem at HQ. The only way I can get to anything is by clicking on my user name. Don't think it's browser-related.

Betsy May 15th, 2006 06:32 AM

Groan. Having typed the reply above, I rebooted and all seems well. Haven't encountered this problem in more than eight years in Fodorville.

LoveItaly May 15th, 2006 07:46 AM

I emailed Fodor's this weekend due to the problems. I received an email from them this morning advising that they had glitches in their system for some days, so they were aware of the problems. I haven't had any problems today so hopefully they have fixed whatever it was.

cmcfong May 15th, 2006 12:59 PM

This is just a point of curiosity to me. I posted a similar question on the US board. Rkkwan and Starrsville responded to me on that thread, but for some reason their posts have disappeared. Any idea what's up?
