private vs. organized tours in st petersburg

We will be in St Petersburg April 30th to May 4th. Should we hire a private guide or go on organized tours. Also any suggestions about tour guides or organized tours.
Thanks for your help.
Pam

Hello PamL1:

We used Red October and our guide was Olga Melnick. Olga is an independent contractor and was working for Red October. In keeping with "not touting" an individual, if you would like her email, let me know. You will love St Petersburg.

Hi PamL1:

We visited St. Petersburg in late October - I would highly suggest to go on an organized tour. We did not and usually do not hire guides or go on tours depending heavily on travel guides. We were totally frustrated with maps, directions, people, getting ripped off, that if I had the opportunity to go back I would do so with a guide.

We were very satisfied with Red October; they were very willing to personalize their "standard" two day tour to our interests. Our guide was Helena; I apologize that I don't recall her last name.

In 2007 we (four persons) had a wonderful experience with Julia and Vladimir. They have a minivan which was comfortable for 4 and likely could handle 6.

You can reach her at [email protected]. There are also many recommendations for private guides in St. Petersburg on the cruise board.

Pam - while we haven't been yet (we'll be there in July), the three companies our travel agent recommended were: Denrus, Alla, and Red October. All three have websites you can look at. Not only do they do group tours, they will work with you and customize a private tour for you. We (and another couple)are booked with Denrus for a private tour for just the 4 of us. Katja from Denrus has been great to work with in planning our itinerary. We're looking forward to our tour with them.
