Princengracht -- What's this Neighborhood in Amsterdam like???
I was wondering if anyone knows what this neighborhood is like --- Princengracht ---
It looks pretty central on the map, but I thought I should double check with those of you who have been there...in case it is a bad area or sketchy... I will be going to Amsterdam for a week and am going to stay in an apartment...I found one I like in this area for a good deal. Any advice is much appreciated!! Thanks! |
Prinsengracht is one of Amsterdam's finest canals/streets - the canal runs down the middle to two narrow brick lanes on each side of the canal. It's a stately canal and as safe as it gets in central Amsterdam. The whole length of the canal is full of mainly posh offices, hotels and nice restaurants. A primo Amsterdam address if you ask me - most folks ideal. Anyway it's not at all seedy like the canals in the redlight district.

The Prinsengracht is over two miles long and hooks around the west and south side of the city. Do you have a more precise location? |
I believe the address is
Prinsengracht 728, but I am not sure, anyhow, here is a link on which there is a map if you click on the additional pictures... http://homeexchange.com/show.php?id=33282 Thanks again for your help! |
Location's perfectly OK, as for almost everywhere along the main canals. It's within walking distance of the Heineken brewery, if you fancy one of their tours, and more importantly of the trams in Vijzelstraat for direct access to the main art museums as well as central Amsterdam. The Albert Cuyp street market is worth a look.

Excellent location (and quite scenic)! You are two blocks from Van Loon Museum, four blocks to Rembrantplein, and right next to all the wonderful restaurtants along Utrechtsestraat. In fact most everything is walking distance and you are close to many tram stops.

I wouldn't hesitate on the location. I clicked on your link and recognized the apartment from having broused it on VRBO. There are some more pictures there, by the way, and the same prices.
I don't want to rain on your parade, but my only hesitation would be that the windows are at street level and I suspect there will be a lot of foot traffic -- and fair amount of car traffic. I'd feel I'd have to keep those draperies closed all the time. But maybe that's just me. http://www.vrbo.com/30677 |
Thank you all -- for your responses, I am going to get the apartment, I live in a noisy part of a city now, so I don't think the noise will bother me there either, but thanks for the concern.
Thanks!!!! |
Just for clarification I wasn't referring to noise at all. I was speaking of the typical Dutch house which is built sort of below ground level so those windows look right out into the sidewalk and street. I'd just be uncomfortable with everybody walking or driving by looking right into my apartment. But again, maybe that's just me.

Patrick--
thanks, but again, I live in SF on a busy street, with many windows and have the same issue here. But thank you for your clarification. Will write back after am back from my 2 month vacation! |
I just wanted to write and let everyone know of the place I stayed and a couple recommendations for Amsterdam...
We stayed in a privately owned studion on Princengracht -- it was 80 euros a night (more in busy season), and it was fantastic!! Comletely new and modern furniture, and very clean. The owner even had stocked the fridge with butter, cheese, milk, eggs, fresh bread, chocolate and a small bottle of wine for us! She was nice and helpful....she called a cab for us for our 6 am departure time, as it might have been difficult to find one on our own...on Sunday morning. The location was superb-- we had a great canal view and Princengracht truely is one of the more beautiful canals. We were just a few minutes walking from most everything, being in pretty much in between Lisenplain, and Rembradtenplain. In Rembrandtenplain (sp?) we went to a somewhat posh lounge type bar called De Kron (sp?) It looked a little bit "neon" from the outside, but then you take 2 flights of stairs or an elevator up to the entrance. It was very nice and a bit dressed up for Amsterdam, it was packed (on a Saturday) with what looked like locals. The prices were cheaper than most other bars, and they even serve dinner and snacks if you like... It is right on the square and there is a great view of it from De Kroon. Hope this helps....oh yeah if you are interested in the studio, there is a link to it further in the post! I am now in Milan for a month, with a few side trips planned....will write and share that on a seperate post... |
how to book the studio on Princengracht, is there a website? thanks, sounds wonderful! we will be in Amsterdam in Sept 2005
