Oh, something costing more doesnīt mean salaries are better. The thing is with petrol you pay mostly taxes. the oil companies pay the very same for the raw-material, refining, transporting and selling it. But what makes for the price difference are local taxes. And by taxes i donīt mean just VAT or sales tax as you call it. There are extra taxes for energy in Europe. Why? Most of the countries are oil importers, so they really donīt want to encourage people to use imported energy. Road traffic costs a lot (maintenance of roads etc) and many feel that since not everyone drives, not everyone should pay. Environment also needs to be considered. Petrol efficient cars can be made if people are willing to pay the price for such technology. Making petrol expensive is a good incentive to buy small and efficient cars. Thatīs why you donīt see many pick-up trucks or SUVs in Europe.
Petrol is expensive around Europe, but thatīs a choice local politicians have made. Guess how the oil-companies feel about it?

40 UK pounds is $75, One thing I don't miss about living in the UK are the gas prices.
It costs us $30 to fill our car which is about 16 Pounds and my neighbours are complaining about the cost of gas. Do you have any older relatives who can remember filling their car for 16 pounds?
