Price of petrol in the UK

Hi, all. I asked this question a few months ago, but since then there has been a considerable increase in the price of crude oil. Subsequently we have seen a huge increase in the price of gasoline/petrol in the US, so I assume the same is true in the UK. Could someone please update me on the price of petrol in the UK? Thanks.

Hi P_M.

In Scotland last week, we paid from 82p/liter to 85p/liter. And when we returned our car at the Manchester Airport, the price was also in the 80s, although I don't recall the exact figure.

Cheapest I've seen in North of England for unleaded is 80.9p a litre, and most expensive 86.9p. Up from around 76p in January.

OK, that's just about what I estimated it would be. It's good to have confirmation. Thanks very much.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's appx. 3.78 liters/US gallon. If it's £.82/liter, then mulitply that by 3.78, then times the exchange of 1.9. I get $5.89/US gallon.

For the sake of easy math, I will consider it $6.00/gallon.

Good job, P.M. That's right. I got really good at doing all that conversion in my head last year driving in the UK, until I decided I should stop and just "pretend" it was only a couple dollars per gallon.

Well I guess we are not paying so much in Asia then! We pay about $ 1.45 a gallon ( had to work it out as we use litres too ).

How much is it in the US these days?

Last Sunday I paid $2.00/gallon for regular here in Austin. It varies from one part of the country to another. I know it's a lot more in California.

So I guess it's all tax in Europe then. I thought they had oil in Norway and places.

In my part of Australia we're currently paying AU$1.05 (US$0.85) per litre - say about US$3.20 per US gallon. Most of this is tax, so the tax component in Europe must be very high indeed.

In our case the price mysteriously jumps just before every weekend, and just as mysteriously falls on Monday morning. As it's unthinkable that the oil companies would collude in such matters the process must be driven by some form of osmosis.

We're a net energy exporter but I think a net oil importer. As I believe the US is a net energy (and oil?) importer, I wonder how long the relatively low American prices can be maintained?

BTW, there's a handy calculator at www.paulnoll.com/China/Metric/number-liters.html. (I'm assuming it's accurate.)

neil, i don't think the price has much to do with net importer/exporter status.

UK has some of the highest prices in the world and overall, we are generally a net exporter of oil. it fluctuates year to year but in the long term we are a next exporter.

Paying $2.39 a gallon in San Diego. It was the lead news story one day last week. And I kept thinking - if they think it is expensive here. When I visited Holland in Nov. my friend told me they're paying $6.00 a gallon. At those prices, I'd be riding my bike too!

I don't mind paying the equivalent of US$6.00 per gallon. I still consider it good value for money.
