Pretty Please with Sugar on Top!!

My sister Amy is about to go on her first trip to England. She has never been out of the country and has only flown once before. She will be spending 3 days in London and 4 days visiting small towns in Dorset. If you have any advice, suggestions, something she shouldn't miss or would just like to wish her a great first trip to the U.K., would you please take a couple of minutes and write a few lines.
I will give this to her when we meet for lunch next week, I think it would be a neat surprise.

Thanks to you all,
her sister,
Robbyn
P.S. If you'd like you can also add where your from next to your name.
P.S.S. This is my second request. I only got one reply to my first one, so THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you get to the Tower of London, definately take a guided tour rather than just walking around on your own. It is well worth it. Have a great time. I loved London and I am sure you will too.

Robbyn - A hint: you likely didn't get much on your earlier thread - and might not on this one either since your title did not mention England, Dorset or London.

Amy - you will love both places. Since you have never been there before everything will be exciting but not so different to be scary. Based on a LOT of excperience tho' I might suggest you add a day or 2 to London and take the same away from Dorset. Not because Dorset isn't fablouts - it is. But because London is so big and so full of places to visit and the first day you will all be very jet lagged and probably want to take it slow. So 4 days (minimum) in London and 2 or 3 days in Dorset might work better.

There is so much info on London, so I will stick to Dorset. Some things you will love include Lyme regis, Corfe Castle, and Abbotsbury. And don't miss the Cerne Abbas Giant - can't be described, you need to see it ;-)

Abbotsbury is missed by a lot of folks - it is an old village of thatched roofed cottages on a lagoon with a swannery, nearby beaches, a ruined abbey and just lovely scenery.

have a great time!!!

Robbyn,

Well London has so many things to do that it is hard to choose, but here you go. Tell Amy to try the London Eye, the Tower of London (guided), of course, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's and at night get some cheap tickets for a play. A real London Pub is a must and fish & chips. After that her 3 days will be up. Hope she has a good trip.

Greg
Thank you Janis for pointing out someone spelled a word wrong. I am so happy you are around to be the spell checker for Fodor's forum and point out someone's mistake even though no one asked. Too bad you weren't able to add any advice for Amy's trip. (

OH, HOW EMBARRASSING!
A million apologies to you Janis. I didn't read the names on above posts. It just makes me mad when I think people are rude to other people. I will chill out and be more aware in the future before getting angry.

Thank you for your original post, it had some great information that I will pass it on.

(I hope I haven't spelt anything wrong here, I will never hear the end of it.)
I feel so extremely stupid!!!! Sorry, Sorry, Sorry!

Robbyn, when you don't get responses to your original message you don't need to repeat it. Just go back to the original message and "top" it. That is type a reply to your own message, saying "to the top" or "ttt" or something similar.

The British Museum, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the National Gallery were a few of my favorite places to visit in London.

If Amy has only flown once before, you may want to prepare her for a long flight. Pick up a book or a bunch of magazines, or something else she really enjoys doing to keep her occupied.

Tell Amy to do some serious shopping while she's in London also. I still have pleasant dreams each night of Harrods, Crabtree & Evelyn, and all of the quaint little shops we visited.

Have a great time, Amy!!

April, not to get off topic here, but is there anything at Crabtree & Evelyn in London that I can't get at the Crabtree & Evelyn store at my local mall?

You don't say how old your sister is, but if she's looking for a good night-life then she should certainly consider Bournemeouth* which has a very thriving nightlife, and is quite fun in the day in an english seaside way.

Also Poole is well worth a visit another coastal town, but much more upmarket.

The new forest is also wonderful

* for people like me , ie Hampshire natives, Bournemeouth is a part of Hampshire that was "annexed" (ie siezed) by Dorset in the seventies to give them at least one town with a football team, the idea being if they had a football teanm to watch they'd leave the wildlife alone.

As such it is disputed territory which we WILL have back.

It's still a nice town though.

We are theater buffs and since London is such a great place for that we saw 14 plays in 12 days. We like Rumpole of the Baily (PBS TV) so sat in on a trial...very interesting. We also went to an Auction.
