Prettiest way to walk from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace

If it's a nice day, is there a pretty/scenic route to walk to Buckingham Palace from Westminster Abbey, or should we just take a bus?

bus? They are practically next door neighbors. Not really, but only about 1/2 a mile/straight shot apart.

Walk the short distance over to Birdcage Walk and then walk along the edge of St James's park.

Yes, you can see the royal pelicans in the park. My daughter and I passed a few years ago while they were being fed. It's a pleasant walk.

Why not have a look at http://www.maps.google.com? You can even try a virtual walk using streetview and see which route appeals to you most?

Another great map-my-walk site, that is actually a bit more accurate than google for the places it does, is walkit.com

Birdcage Walk and then walk through St. James Park, not on the edge.

There is no bus will take you to Buckingham Palace. The closest is a couple of stops up Victoria Street and then navigate your way either up round past the Mews to the front, or all the way round the back garden wall and down Constitution Hill again. Either way, deadly dull.

The quickest and simplest way is as Enzian says.

Wrenwood,

“Another great map-my-walk site, that is actually a bit more accurate than google for the places it does, is walkit.com”

Texasbookworm makes a good suggestion. I used walkit.com extensively before my trip to London last year and found it most helpful.

Unfortunately I found no similar site for Paris so used google.

For a pure "pretty" walk through St James's Park, stopping on the bridge for the views.

For a slightly longer and more historical walk, go up Whitehall to Trafalgar, then left through Admiralty Arch, and through St. James's Park. Take a printed walk guide with you (from any of the popular tour books) for the Whitehall portion.

Looks like enough for one day to me (we're slow tourists)

Westminster Abbey first thing AM

Leave Westminster, Horse Guards Road along St James Park past Parade Ground, then go through Admiralty Arch over to Trafalgar Square, back through the arch and walk through St. James's Park to Buckingham Palace.

Oops

The State Rooms, Buckingham Palace including the special exhibition Diamonds: A Jubilee Celebration ~ 30 June - 8 July and 31 July - 7 October 2012
09:45-18:30 (last admission 15:45) A typical visit lasts between 2 and 2½ hours
*****Last admission 3:45 ~ maybe we walk to the Palace and then walk back through St James, the Arch, Trafalgar Square, eat dinner in the area?
