Prem Fares
I have purchased Prem tickets before so I don't have a problem using their site. What I would like advice on is, do the fares go up and down like airfares? The trend of the fares I am looking at is definitely upward --...is it safe to assume that right now is the lowest they will get and we might as well buy them now or should we hold out in hopes that they will decrease? (I need tickets for for the 27 June.)

AFAIK, they don't go down. Once they're all gone, you have to buy the next fare up, which is usually the leisure (loisirs) fare.

You should have purchased PREMS on March 26 at 6PM EST. We're on a CDG to Bordeaux TGV. I purchaed tickets 5 mins after they first became available, but there were no PREMS offered at all. I purchased the lowest 1st class fare available, and the next day fares were higher than the price I paid.

We have only settled on our plan in the last month---we probably missed out an a I got the least expensive Prem for our date and it just happens to be the best time and also in 1st class, so I don't feel too badly!
Thanks for letting me know how the whole thing works--next time I will feel a little more "pressure" to make a timely decision! |
wren, if it makes you feel better, I have actually seen them go down again, but only within a few days of the actual departure of the train, which is too scary for most people like you to contemplate waiting for (me, it's typical that my kids wouldn't know they were joining me until the last minute, so that's how I know).
I think a few days before the train departs they deeply discount a few PREMs to make sure the train is full and also probably to make folks think how cool it is to get a great deal that they will immediately pass on to everyone else (marketing 101). |
Yes, they started last minute discounts about six months ago when the trains are not full. I think the prices drop 48 hours before departure, maybe even sooner if the train is really empty.

Since I won't have access to the internet for two weeks prior, I think I did the right thing! I would definitely need to buy them in the next 2 weeks, so you are correct, St. Cirq, it isn't worth playing roulette for a few euros!
