Pregnant, going to Greece, Cheese Safe?
 

My family and I are going to Greece in September, when I will be nearly 6 months pregnant. Being pregnant, I am supposed to avoid unpasturized cheese due to the risk of listeriosis.

Does anyone know if the cheeses in Greece are pasturized? How in the world do I find that out at a restaurant?

I haven't found a translation for pasturized in my little Greek language book!

I can't imagine that Greek pregnant women avoid all the wonderful soft cheeses made there!

Pregnant women in France are told to avoid all the wonderful unpasteurized cheeses there, so I imagine the Greek women are advised similarly.

I went to France with my daughter when she was 14 weeks pregnant, and when I asked at the 3 star restaurant where we were having lunch if their cheeses were pasteurized, they unequivocally responded that all were unpasteurized. We found some supermarket brands that were pasteurized, but it seemed that most restaurants had the raw milk type.

I'm sure someone on here will tell you the Greek word for pasteurized/unpasteurized, but you could always go to a "tourist" restaurant early on where some English is spoken and ask them to write the words down for future use.

Were you told to avoid lettuce salads, also? Same reason.

In Greece the main cheeses are feta or Kefalotyri which are traditionally unpasteurized but lately feta is available more and more pasteurized.

Definately ask.
