areinart,
I -and I think there were many- enjoyed your report.
While it was just Your opinion, I think others more travelled just offered Their opinions.
That is what is great about these boards, we hear about other trips and learn from their experiences. Many people thanked you, I think you should not be offended and do post the entire report.

I, too, was wincing as I read some of the responses.
The bigger question is why are people posting, specifically on the Europe Board, so condensending and hostile?
I loiter on the Asia and Africa boards and find the tone there very different - people are open minded and helpful.
Heck, I live in Europe, and have travelled to more than 30 countries so I feel qualified to post on this board but very often I do not for fear of being slammed.
I hope one of your... lessons learned... was not to quit posting here!

areinet, don't let them put you off. This board is for everyone. There are some who think they should always correct us just because of attitude and then there are those who correct us to be helpful. THIS IS YOUR BOARD TOO!!!!

Areinert - Thanks for the battlebus site. I didn't know about it and it is very interesting. We learn something from each post. Keep up the good work. We recently spent 2 weeks in Paris and our experiences were somewhat different from yours. But, of course each is different. We used the carnets and they were right for us. Especially since we walk a lot and due to the strikes some days we would go down into the metro and they were not collecting tickets so we rode free. On another note - the Frankfort airport is my favorite airport because of the supermarket . I always plan some shopping there - did this on our connection from Paris. This board is invaluable to plan trips . Happy traveling. CJ

Areinert,
1 - Your post could be helpful to many people. I think you opened the door for everyone to jump all over when you use the word "don't" ... If you simply stated your findings (oh never mind, those who are so inclined would argue anyway!)...
2 - For instance I shipped packages home several times successfully, but that doesn't mean your experience isn't valid.
3 - Most important: and back to the original premise, I am so glad you chose to go it on your own for the trip. The problem with the travel agent's advise that a first timer should only go with a tour group --- how are you ever going to learn? My belief is a tour (although you will have seen something of Europe whizzing by) builds no skills at all to deal with the next trip on your own.
So you have my thanks for participating on this BB and being so honest about your preparations and experiences.

Whoa! I just reread this entire thread and failed to notice much, if any, hostility. Yes, some of us disagreed with either the form or content or both of the original posting! Does that mean we shouldn't express our opinions in a civilized manner (which I think we did)?

I, too, liked your 'disclaimer.' If you sense responses are getting too serious, that's a perfect way to handle the situation - lighten it up with a little humour.
That said, it probably doesn't hurt any of us to be reminded that opinions can have consequences, from the benign to the quite serious. Example of the latter would be if I gave my opinion to a German policeman as to what he could do with his traffic laws, for example. : - ) Sometimes, too, there are some areas (like passports) where the traveller's opinion simply doesn't count - the presiding authority in question holds all the cards, as it were.
Now, go ahead and give us your report, and if any of us hand you a lemon, make lemonade. It's certainly hot enough for it.
