Prague/Vienna

Our family of four is planning a trip to Europe. We arrive in Prague and go to Vienna from there. I am shocked at the train cost between Prague and Vienna. Almost $190 for a night train per person (RailEurpoe). Is there a more econmical way to travel. Once we are in Vienna we will start using our Eurail pass.

First of all, RailEurope charges you more than you would pay in Europe; second, why pay the extra for a night train when it is only a four to four-and-a-half hour trip on a day train?

According to the Austrian Rail site. the second class fare is 49.20 Euro, with some special fares as low as 29.

Thanks for your prompt response .. Using a night train we were hoping to save on the cost for a hotel room ... or rather two hotel rooms as most of them do not allow more than three people in the room.

Or you can go by bus. The bus takes about 3 1/2 hours and leaves you near the Vienna City Hall. It costs about 14 Euro. The difference between train and bus for four people could go a long way in paying for that hotel room.

Our family of four visited Vienna and Prague, and we found hotels that could accomodate us in a family or quad room. Much cheaper than two rooms, of course, if you can deal with having just one bathroom.

The one we really liked was the Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth in Vienna. It's a four-star, I believe, and not inexpensive. But it's very nice, with a beautiful breakfast included. Worth every penny.

The place we wanted in Prague was the Pension Dietzenhofer (sp?), but it was not available. There were many in Prague that suited four people.

Thanks for the hotel info. I have not yet got to booking the hotels and appreciate your input. I understand having breakfast included in the room rate is a must as it can get expensive to eat out.

The bus option sounds really economical but we really enjoy using the train so I will look into the 2nd class fares as suggested.

How do you save on a night's hotel cost if the travel time is only a few hours?

What is your hotel budget?

Forgot to add our hotel budget. Our preference would be to have two rooms (so we can have two bathrooms) and we were looking to spend under 250 dollars per night total. We would like to have breakfast included in the room rate.

In Prague, the hotel Kampa Garden should work for you. It's a nice place in a terrific location on Kampa Island located just under the Charles Bridge with quick and easy access onto the bridge. A decent breakfast is included. The entire hotel is non-smoking if that makes a difference.

The bus ride was actually pretty nice and the drop off point in the middle of Vienna was convenient.

P.S. We took the train to Prague from Vienna, using second-class fares for our family of four. Call budgeteuropetravel.com. They know all the fares and will give you great advice. You can buy your tickets from them, with a very small handling fee to have them mailed to your home.

We were in Prague in September. We stayed at the Lida Guest House. The room we had was large. Looking at the prices and exchange rates now it looks like you could get two double rooms for about the equivalent of $170 per night.
It is a great place to stay - the owners help you in anyway they can. He sits with you and gives you a map and shows you how to get around Prague.
The breakfast is good. The metro is close by and it is a few blocks to the tram. There are some good inexpensive restaurants close by.
There were people staying there who were originally from Prague and they said they always stay at the Lida. It was full every night we were there.
Also, free internet.

We recently returned from a trip to Vienna and Prague. When we arrived in Vienna, we immediately went to the train station to buy tickets for our trip to Prague the following week. I strongly recommend buying your tickets when you get there. It was MUCH cheaper than the fares we saw online when researching from home. The representative was also able to offer us a deeper discount on a second class fare since we were buying the tickets more than 5 days in advance of our trip. We only paid 56 Euros total for two tickets, as compared to 78 Euros (normal price).
