Going to Prague in May. Was going to stay near the castle then learned the walk to the hotel was up a hill. I have a bad knee and hills are difficult. Is there a Prague district that is relatively flat with good hotels?

Other than the castle hill, most of Prague is flat-ish. Old Town, Josefov, Mala Strana, Kampa Island, New Town. You can take a tram up to the castle.

We stayed at the Savic Hotel very near Old Town Square. Some rooms are between elevator stops, so if a few stairs are an issue, ask for a room you can reach without stairs.

If you have mobility problems it is a good thing to pre-plan your excursions in Prague, as well as selecting hotels in close proximity to tram/Metro stations. I have lung problems, so I became very aware of every incline in that town this May. Study of the excellent public transport system will save you a lot of grief.

One specific thing I can recommend that will save you a lot of knee discomfort is to stay on the tram to the castle longer than most guidebooks suggest. If you take the public transport up you will be on the #22 tram. Do NOT get off at the Prazky hrad stop, where most of the tourist alight, as there are some serious uphill steps between you and the palaces. Stay on the tram for the next stop, Prohelec, which takes you almost all of the way to the top of the hill at the Monastery. It is all downhill from there.

You don't really want to know what district to stay in, because District 1 covers a large area, including the castle area, which is on a hill. It also covers Mala Strana (which also can have some hills depending on location, there are some hotels on the hill down from the castle, although others at river level), as well as the area across the river around Old Town Square and Josefov (which is quite flat).

So asking about a neighborhood is better than a district, and I would also recommend the area around Old Town Square. There are tons of hotels around there, don't know your budget but since there really aren't hardly any hotels around the Castle, I'm guessing you are not looking at super cheap.

I really like the Hotel Pariz which is fairly near Wenceslas Gate and in a flat area and right near a tram line and a metro stop.

You also should know that the very center of Prague around Old Town Square does not have any metro nor tram lines, they go around the edge of it. This isn't a huge distance from Namesti Republicky to the metro stop near the bridge, but it's something to know, especially about the tram lines.

Short answer = Prague 1.

Longer answer = Old Town, Josefov or Mala Strana. Don't stay in Hradcany - just convenient to the castle but not the rest of the city and the walk back to your lodging will be uphill.

I would agree with what others have said. I personally stay in the Dejvice area which is relatively flat and you can walk to the castle area from there but I really would not suggest it for a first time visitor.I do think the Old town would be ideal, mainly flat and all the sights are in mainly pedestrianised areas.
If going to the castle take the 22tram up the hill,I would go as far as Poholerec 2 stops past the main castle entrance and take the gentle walk downhill from there, you are close to the Strahov Monastry there and also you have to pass close to the Lorreto building on your way down to the castle.

Look at Hotel Rott and The Prague Inn. Do make certain that the hotel you book has an elevator, quite a few do not.
