Prague vs. Vienna

I need to make a decision very soon and I need some suggestions. What is the better city to spend one week, Vienna or Prague?
And why?

Ira Nov 29th, 2002 07:20 AM

Why not do both - 4 days in one, 3 in the other. It's a 4 1/2 train ride between cities.

I heard Vienna was a much safer city than Prague.

What do you want? The two cities are really different in many ways -- costs, geography, resources, maybe even diversity. Prague is more compact. Vienna offers more. But to repeat, they are different.

Vienna has many more sights and things to see and do (probably number 3 in Europe, after London and Paris). Prague can be seen in one day, but it is a better place to just wander aimlessly around.

From my personal experience, I would definitely say Prague. It was one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been in and much "warmer" than Vienna. I found Vienna beautiful but in a distant sort of way. I think maybe the buildings were a little more grand and the people polite but distant. I felt Prague had so many moods, based on time of day and weather, that I wanted to stay longer than our week there to explore even more. Besides, Prague was much less expensive, except accomodation, which invited more time trying different foods and sidewalk cafes (I usually travel on a fairly tight budget).

I agree with Ira. While some prefer exploring in depth, if I had just one week, I'd split it up with 4 nights in one and 3 nights in the other, taking a train between the two.

I agree with Linda. Although Vienna was pretty, I found the people to be indifferent. I stayed a week in Prague earlier this year and felt like I could have stayed another couple of days.

But, like everyone else says, the two are very different and you need to assess what you want to get out of the trip.

One week is a bit much in either location. Split it up and enjoy both.
4 in vienna and 3 in Prague.

I would side with Linda and vote for Prague. Having been to both, I would say Vienna is a bit overrated and you would only like it if you were really into European history. If you are looking for nice scenery and a place to walk around and get good food and beer for cheap, then go to Prague.

Jane Nov 30th, 2002 02:02 AM

I would vote for Vienna. It has much more to do and see than Prague. You can also do several daytrips from the city; especially yo Melk.

Based on my recent trip, I would say Vienna. It was one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen. Prague was also nice, but much smaller and much "rougher around the edges". Prague can be fully explored in two - three days. Do both if you really can't decide.
